“At the end of this finiteness there is nothing left to lose.” (Barbara Köhler) - Jenůfa is pregnant. However, the child's father Števa decides against her. For fear of social ostracism, Jenůfa will give birth to her child in isolation. Only her stepmother, the village sexton, stands by her, but she worries about Jenůfa's reputation. She makes a momentous decision: the sexton secretly drowns the newborn in the cutting cold river. The expressive orchestral sounds of Leoš Janáček's third and most successful opera break between the narrowness of the village and breathtaking powerlessness. Director Armin Petras and General Music Director Yoel Gamzou dedicate themselves - after the success of Shostakovich's "Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk"
