I am devoid of faith and therefore cannot be happy, since a happy man will never fear that his life is a meaningless wandering towards a certain death. He has not been given to me in inheritance neither a god nor a firm point on earth from which I can draw the attention of God; nor have I inherited the dissimulated fury of the skeptic, nor the cunning of the rationalist, nor the ardent candor of the atheist. That is why I do not dare to throw a stone at someone who believes in things that I doubt, or at someone who idolizes doubt as if it were not surrounded by darkness. This stone would reach me since I am convinced of one thing: the need for consolation that human beings have is insatiable
