A "combination of interpretative genius and insanity" is how Nikolaus Harnoncourt once described this year's Wiener Symphoniker Artist in Residence: French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Famous first and foremost as a fervent and highly intelligent champion of 20th and 21st century music, we often forget that Aimard is currently one of the most sensitive performers of the classical piano repertoire around. Joined by the Wiener Symphoniker under their Music Director, over the coming year Aimard will concentrate on Beethoven's five piano concertos – always in direct dialogue with orchestral works by another great musical innovator, Béla Bartók. Here the early piece for orchestra, "Két Portré", and the Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta frame Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto. Please note: This concert is presented as part of a cooperation between the Wiener Symphoniker and the Wiener Konzerthaus Society.

Als eine "Mischung aus interpretatorischem Genie und Wahnsinn" beschrieb Nikolaus Harnoncourt einmal den diesjährigen Artist in Residence der Wiener Symphoniker: den französischen Pianisten Pierre-Laurent Aimard. Gerühmt vor allem als glühender, hochintelligenter Verfechter der Musik des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts, wird oft vergessen, dass Aimard derzeit auch einer der feinfühligsten Interpreten der klassischen Klavierliteratur ist. Gemeinsam mit den Wiener Symphonikern unter ihrem Chefdirigenten widmet Aimard sich nun im kommenden Jahr Beethovens fünf Klavierkonzerten – immer im direkten Dialog mit Orchesterwerken eines anderen großen musikalischen Erneuerers, Béla Bartók. Das frühe Orchesterstück "Két Portré" und die Musik für Saiteninstrumente, Schlagzeug und Celesta rahmen hier Beethovens Viertes Klavierkonzert ein. Anmerkung: Dieses Konzert wird im Rahmen einer Kooperation zwischen den Wiener Symphonikern und der Wiener Konzerthausgesellschaft durchgeführt.
