Compositions from three eras are on the program of this concert with the Bamberg Symphony under the direction of conductor, composer and clarinetist Jörg Widmann. It goes back to Viennese classical music, to the lyrical sounds of early Romanticism and to the magical, fantastic sound language of Korngold in the 1940s.
Weber's Concertino for clarinet and orchestra kicks off this concert evening, in which Jörg Widmann will enchant us as a soloist right from the start with his virtuoso, equally deeply felt clarinet playing. The one-movement work bears witness to Weber's masterful mastery of musical forms; on the one hand it is based on the framework of the sonata, but on the other hand it also features free, almost improvisational moments.
Erich Wolfgang Korngold made a name for himself in Hollywood as a composer of film music. Korngold once fled to America to escape the reprisals of the Nazi dictatorship, but after the end of the Second World War he traveled frequently to Europe. This is how the Vienna Symphony Orchestra premiered his Symphonic Serenade in 1950. The composition combines the best of two worlds: the lush, dense, melodic sound language of late romanticism and the effective inventiveness of a film music score.
Mozart designed the instrumentation of his G minor symphony to be rather simple , but in no way failed to have an incredible effect on the listener. Quite the opposite: This symphony can probably be counted among Mozart's most dramatic works, without developing any ponderous tragedy. The melodic lines of this music flow gallantly and gracefully and make a fresh lightness audible in every note. Another example of the miracle of Mozart that you simply have to experience in concert.
