A young man dreams of a forbidden love. An old man dreams of the young man he was. Between them, the forest of legends and memories… From Janáček's lieder cycle, Ivo van Hove has drawn a whole inner drama, like the passion of the old Czech composer for his ultimate muse.

In 1917, a 63-year-old composer, married and on the verge of fame, met a young mother, his junior by 37 years. “Without you,” he confides to her, “none of my compositions could be born from this desert in which I live”. As soon as he returned home, he set about composing the Diary of a Disappearedrecounting the love of a teenager, Janíček, for a Gypsy girl named Zefka, and the torments of her torn conscience. The personal inspiration that animates Janáček is obvious; Ivo van Hove wanted to highlight it by dividing the role of Janíček, so as to let the composer in the evening of his life and the very young man of his dream dialogue together. The director of the Toneelgroep Amsterdam has also asked the Flemish composer Annelies Van Parys to complete the cycle, so as to bend its rhythmic curve while developing the role and point of view of Zefka: the gypsy wonders her turn on the identity of her gadjo lover, as mysteriously foreign to her as she is to him.

Un jeune homme rêve d’un amour interdit. Un vieil homme rêve du jeune homme qu’il fut. Entre eux, la forêt des légendes et du souvenir… Du cycle de lieder de Janáček, Ivo van Hove a tiré tout un drame intérieur, à l’image de la passion du vieux compositeur tchèque pour son ultime muse.

En 1917, un compositeur de 63 ans, marié et à l’orée de la célébrité, rencontre une jeune mère, sa cadette de 37 ans. « Sans toi,» lui confie-t-il, « aucune de mes compositions ne pourrait naître de ce désert dans lequel je vis ». Dès son retour chez lui, il s’attelle à la composition du Journal d’un disparu relatant l’amour d’un adolescent, Janíček, pour une Tzigane nommée Zefka, et les tourments de sa conscience déchirée. L’inspiration personnelle qui anime Janáček est manifeste; Ivo van Hove a souhaité la mettre en lumière en dédoublant le rôle de Janíček, de façon à laisser dialoguer ensemble le compositeur au soir de sa vie et le tout jeune homme de son rêve. Le directeur du Toneelgroep Amsterdam a en outre demandé à la compositrice flamande Annelies Van Parys de compléter le cycle, de façon à en infléchir la courbe rythmique tout en y développant le rôle et le point de vue de Zefka: la tzigane s’y interroge à son tour sur l’identité de son amant gadjo, aussi mystérieusement étranger pour elle qu’elle l’est pour lui.
