Napoléon, comme Louis XIV, comprit la force de l’Art pour éduquer et instruire. L’opéra fut un des rouages de cette politique habile. La détermination napoléonienne se concrétise grâce à une armée de compositeurs regroupée au sein du Conservatoire, ouvert en 1795. L’ambition expansionniste de Napoléon ne s’arrête pas au seul talent français : sa conquête de l’Italie lui permet d’en découvrir les artistes. Cette rencontre décisive ouvre toutes grandes les portes de l’Opéra de Paris aux compositeurs comme Spontini et Cherubini qui, dans la lignée de Sacchini, Piccinni et Salieri, inventeront le romantisme monumental dont Wagner et Verdi se nourriront plus tard. C’est l’ébullition de ce laboratoire lyrique que le programme servi par Judith van Wanroij et le Quatuor Cambini-Paris, et conçu par le Palazzetto Bru Zane, veut illustrer.
