The biblical story of Judith, who seduces and beheads the invading Holofernes, was used by Antonio Vivaldi as an allegory to celebrate the Venetian victory over the Turks in August 1716, two months after having strenuously defended the island of Corfu. Indeed, in November of that same year, Vivaldi proposed the "sacred military" oratorio Juditha triumphans in the Ospizio della Pietà where he had worked since 1703. This oratorio is the only existing one of the four that Vivaldi composed and contains pages of extraordinary beauty, such as the one in which Vagaus, servant of Holofernes, discovers the death of his master; for Michael Talbot, distinguished Vivaldi scholar, this is "the most beautiful scene in all of Vivaldi's music".
The intense atmosphere of war is conveyed through dynamic choral writing; Judith's faith and integrity through lyrical and tender writing. Of great interest is the use of many different and relatively rare instruments, such as the viola d'amore, chalumeaux and theorbo , used by Vivaldi to highlight the most significant moments.

La storia biblica di Giuditta, che seduce e decapita l’invasore Oloferne, fu usata da Antonio Vivaldi come allegoria per celebrare la vittoria veneziana dei Turchi nell’agosto del 1716, due mesi dopo aver difeso strenuamente l’isola di Corfù. Infatti, nel novembre di quello stesso anno, Vivaldi propose l’oratorio “militare sacro” Juditha triumphans nell’Ospizio della Pietà dove lavorava dal 1703. Questo oratorio è l’unico esistente dei quattro che Vivaldi compose e contiene pagine di straordinaria bellezza, come quella in cui Vagaus, servo di Oloferne, scopre la morte del suo padrone; per Michael Talbot, illustre studioso di Vivaldi, questa è “la scena più bella di tutta la musica di Vivaldi”.
L’intensa atmosfera di guerra è trasmessa attraverso una scrittura corale dinamica; la fede e l’integrità di Judith attraverso una scrittura lirica e tenera. Di grande interesse è l’uso di molti strumenti diversi e relativamente rari, come la viola d’amore, il chalumeaux e la tiorba, usati da Vivaldi per mettere in evidenza i momenti più significativi.
