Ein tanzender Inka-Tristan? Die American Modern Opera Company ist für ihre genreübergreifenden Inszenierungen bekannt. Mit der gefeierten Sopranistin Julia Bullock setzt sie nun Olivier Messiaens zwölfteiligen »Harawi«-Zyklus über eine peruanische Variante des Tristan-Mythos in Szene.

Julia Bullock ist spätestens seit ihrem Auftritt bei den »Tiny Desk Concerts« des US-amerikanischen National Public Radio, bei dem unter anderem Weltstars wie Sting, Adele, oder Alicia Keys zu Gast waren, international einem breiten Publikum bekannt. Ihren Einstand in der Elbphilharmonie hat sie im Rahmen der heiteren Silvester- und Neujahrskonzerte des NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchesters gefeiert. Wenn sie im Mai zum Internationalen Musikfest nach Hamburg zurückkehrt, stellt sie die ernste Seite ihrer facettenreichen Stimme unter Beweis.

A dancing Inca Tristan? The American Modern Opera Company is known for its cross-genre productions. With the celebrated soprano Julia Bullock, she is now staging Olivier Messiaen's twelve-part »Harawi« cycle about a Peruvian variant of the Tristan myth.

Julia Bullock has been known to a wide international audience at least since her appearance at the US National Public Radio's "Tiny Desk Concerts", which featured international stars such as Sting, Adele and Alicia Keys. She made her Elbphilharmonie debut as part of the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra's cheerful New Year's Eve and New Year's Concerts. When she returns to Hamburg for the International Music Festival in May, she will demonstrate the serious side of her multi-faceted voice.

The composer Olivier Messiaen, who has a wide range of interests and is also a hobby ornithologist and synaesthete, created »Harawi« in 1945 as a song cycle. On the one hand, the starting point was the traditional music of the Andes: As early as the Inca Empire, emotional songs that dealt with tragic love and were accompanied by the sounds of flutes were called Harawi. Messiaen combines this genre with Richard Wagner's great opera about the impossible love between the knight Tristan and Princess Isolde, albeit in his very own, unmistakably multicolored tonal language. The American Modern Opera Company is now staging the approximately one-hour song cycle as a scenic production.
