Kalîla wa Dimna Adwan

If Italy has Machiavelli and his Prince, China Sun Tzu and his Art of War, the Arab world has inscribed in Kalîla wa Dimnahis golden rules for the education of princes. Taken from an epic India of the 3rd century, translated into Persian then adapted into Arabic for the greatest literary pleasure of the caliphs, these lively and often funny fables draw a world where it is better to know how to hold one's tongue in the face of the powerful, and where all the truths are not good to say. Poetic and political, they will soon conquer medieval Europe, then inspire Le Roman de Renart, La Fontaine, the Grimm brothers... Born in the Gaza Strip, trained in the classical traditions of Arab music and the joys of its popular repertoire, the composer Moneim Adwan has designed this fable-opera for an audience of all ages, sung in French and Arabic. To tell the story of these twins with opposing aspirations, the realistic Kalîla and the ambitious Dimna, Adwan wanted “a reduced orchestra made up of instrumentalists from all over the world, who will mainly play oriental music. However, adds the composer, I have been living in France for several years and I have absorbed a lot of European culture.Kalîla wa Dimna will therefore also result from this marriage between Arab and European cultures.” An enchanted reflection on the fatality of power, carried by the breath of the tale.
