The opera King Roger is the crowning work of Karol Szymanowski, whose creation is dated between 1918 and 1924. The libretto was written by the composer in collaboration with his distant cousin Jaroslaw Iwaszkiewicz, who later became a well-known Polish writer. After several visits to Italy and Sicily, Szymanowski was fascinated by their culture and history, as well as the unknown worlds that opened up to him in the Mediterranean environment. King Roger 's spiritual inspiration was also Euripides ' Bacchantes , Plato's Phaedron and Symposion, as well as the works of Friedrich Nietzsche.

 

The story of the opera is the story of the ruler Roger as a representative of the social system, the world of rationality, order and faith, which will be disturbed by the mysterious Shepherd. With the arrival of a modern-day prophet who preaches hedonism and debauchery and is followed by crowds, not only the existing social order will be shaken, but Roger's personal transformation will also begin. Szymanowski himself referred to his work as a "mystery" - his themes are self-knowledge of man, his sexuality and altered states of consciousness, but also religion and new forms of spirituality.

Karol Szymanowski created a unique musical language in the opera, which is based on various compositional and musical styles. In the characterization of the opposite worlds of King Roger and the Shepherd and in the ecstatic peaks of the work, we can find influences of modern music of the beginning of the 20th century, exotic oriental motifs, but we also hear Goral tunes from around the Tatras.

This original synthesis of musical and spiritual-philosophical influences in King Roger is one of the reasons why this work has become closer to the modern audience in recent years and is experiencing its renaissance on the world's biggest opera stages.

Opera Kráľ Roger je vrcholným dielom Karola Szymanowského, ktorého vznik je datovaný medzi rokmi 1918 a 1924. Libreto napísal skladateľ v spolupráci so svojím vzdialeným bratrancom Jaroslawom Iwaszkiewiczom, ktorý sa stal neskôr známym poľským spisovateľom. Szymanowski po viacerých návštevách Talianska a Sicílie bol fascinovaný ich kultúrou a históriou, ako aj neznámymi svetmi, ktoré sa mu otvorili práve v mediteránskom prostredí. Duchovnou inšpiráciou KráľaRogera sa stali tiež Euripidove Bakchantky, Platónov Phaedron a Symposion, ako i diela Friedricha Nietzscheho.

 

Príbeh opery je príbehom vládcu Rogera ako reprezentanta spoločenského systému, sveta racionality, poriadku a viery, ktorý naruší tajomný Pastier. Príchodom novodobého proroka, ktorý káže hedonizmus a neviazanosť a ktorého nasledujú davy, sa otrasie nielen existujúci spoločenský poriadok, ale začne aj osobná Rogerova premena. Szymanowski sám označoval svoje dielo ako "mystérium" - jeho témami sú sebapoznanie človeka, jeho sexualita a zmenené stavy vedomia, ale i náboženstvo a nové formy spirituality.

Karol Szymanowski vytvoril v opere osobitý hudobný jazyk, ktorý vychádza z rozličných kompozičných a hudobných štýlov. V charakteristike protikladných svetov kráľa Rogera a Pastiera i v extatických vrcholoch diela môžeme nájsť vplyvy modernej hudby začiatku 20. storočia, exotické orientálne motívy, ale započujeme aj goralské nápevy z okolia Tatier.

Táto originálna syntéza hudobných a duchovno-filozofických vplyvov v Kráľovi Rogerovi je jednou z príčin, prečo sa toto dielo v posledných rokoch priblížilo modernému divákovi a zažíva svoju renesanciu na najväčších operných scénach sveta.
