The internationally successful soprano Annette Dasch interprets Leoš Janáček's masterfully oppressive portrait of a young woman who rebels against her living conditions. A shooting star leads the production at the conductor's desk: the Lithuanian conductor Giedrė Šlekytė. Director Jetske Mijnssen returns to her former place of work and takes a new look at the tragedy of an extraordinary female figure.

Great longing, honest morals and hard-hearted contemporaries - in search of a fulfilling life, the young Katja breaks the marriage convention. All her life she has been wrestling with herself, her world, her outside world. Driven and plagued by unfulfilled passions, Katja's fight against everyone else is ultimately a rebellion against her own bitterness. So her leap into supposed happiness ends in tragic downfall: Katja puts an end to her lifelong escape from herself with her suicide.

The Czech Leoš Janáček is an exceptional artist among the composers of the early 20th century. He devotedly listened to the people, their ways of speaking, the inner worlds in the sound of their voices and developed his very own style of composition from this. In Katja Kabanowa Janáček combines musical language analysis with expressive timbres and delicate motif work in the service of figure psychology to create a compelling character portrait, a musical drama that is as masterful as it is modern.
