It is the first time ever that the ensemble of the Swiss Grand Théâtre de Genève, a theatre with a long and rich tradition, has come to the Janáček Brno festival. Accompanying them is the German director Tatjana Gürbaca, who has been one of the most important figures in the opera world for the last decade, with a brand-new production. Wagner´s The Ring of the Nibelung for the Theater an der Wien (2017) and Parsifal for Opera Vlaanderen rank among the greatest successes of her career. It isn´t the first time this director with a refined style has encountered a Czech opera; in 2020 she staged Dvořák´s Rusalka at the English National Opera, and she is also preparing Janáček´s Jenůfa for the spring of 2022, co-produced with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. One of the best contemporary Czech conductors, Tomáš Netopil, who performed Janáček´s The Makropulos Case at the festival in 2018, will be in charge of the musical production. Katya Kabanova will be performed by the excellent Swiss symphony orchestra Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, which regularly collaborates with the Geneva Opera. Together with the Prague production of Bieito´s Katya Kabanova, this beautiful opera offers yet another extraordinary experience for festival visitors.

 

There was nothing traditional in Janáček´s creative life, so it is not surprising that he began to consider the idea of creating the first of his four top operas at the mature age of almost sixty-five. The circumstances were more than favourable. Thanks to the Prague and Viennese productions of Jenůfa, he had finally received the recognition he truly deserved not only at home, but also on the international scene. And a new woman had entered his life – during his summer stay in Luhačovice in 1917 he met Kamila Stösslová, a beautiful lady who became a source of unceasing inspiration to him until his death. The search for a theme for a new opera now led him to Russian literature, and it is not surprising that he was fascinated by the story of Katya Kabanova, the heroine of the play The Storm by Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky. He thus returned to the portrayal of great female characters and their tragic life stories, which he had achieved so masterfully in his previous works Jenůfa and Destiny.

After his negative experience with librettists when creating The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, he decided to prepare the libretto from the Czech translation of the play himself, a strategy which had proved to bring success in the case of Jenůfa. He significantly shortened the extensive play, which largely deals with politics and the moral decline of Russian society in the middle of the 19th century, and he also reduced the number of characters. The focal point was Katya, who deals with her unhappy marriage by fleeing into the world of fantasy, and who is driven to a tragic end by hypocrisy and social pressure. This approach enabled Janáček to create a very intimate drama built on the contrast of two worlds – the dream world of Katya, and the rough and hard world of Kabanicha and the weak Tichon, in which there are only occasional flashes of unstoppable optimism and merriment from the young Varvara. 

After his Prague troubles with the performance of The Excursions of Mr. Brouček, Janáček decided to offer the premiere of Katya Kabanova to National Theatre Brno. The opera was performed here for the first time on 23rd November 1921 at the theatre Na hradbách (today´s Mahen Theatre), and it was an extraordinary success. Performances followed in Prague and abroad a year later. He returned to his opera a few years afterwards for very practical reasons – in order to connect the individual scenes in Act 1 and Act 2 smoothly, music was needed for the changes. This was heard for the first time during a performance in 1928. Coincidentally, Katya Kabanova was the last performance of his work that the composer saw before his unexpected death in August 1928.

Vůbec poprvé na festival Janáček Brno přijíždí soubor švýcarského Grand Théâtre de Genève, divadla s dlouhou a bohatou tradicí. Spolu s ním se ve zbrusu nové inscenaci představí německá režisérka Tatjana Gürbaca, která patří v posledních deseti letech k nepřehlédnutelným osobnostem operního světa. Mezi největší úspěchy její kariéry se řadí např. Wagnerův Prsten Nibelungův pro Theater an der Wien (2017) či Parsifal pro Opera Vlaanderen. S českou operou se tato režisérka s vytříbeným rukopisem nesetkává poprvé, v roce 2020 nastudovala v English National Opera Dvořákovu Rusalku a s ženevským souborem připravuje na jaro 2022 i Janáčkovu Její pastorkyňu vznikající v koprodukci s Deutsche Oper am Rhein. Hudebního nastudování se ujme jeden z nejlepších současných českých dirigentů Tomáš Netopil, jenž se na festivalu představil již v roce 2018 s Janáčkovou Věcí Makropulos. Káťa Kabanová zazní v podání vynikajícího švýcarského symfonického orchestru Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, který s ženevskou operou pravidelně spolupracuje. Spolu s pražskou inscenací Bieitovy Káti Kabanové tak na festivalové diváky čeká další mimořádný zážitek s touto krásnou operou.

V Janáčkově tvůrčím životě nebylo nic tradičního, proto nepřekvapí, že myšlenkami na první ze svých čtyř vrcholných operních děl se začal zabývat až ve zralém věku blížících se pětašedesátin. Okolnosti tomu byly více než příznivé. Díky pražskému a vídeňskému provedení Její pastorkyně se mu konečně dostalo zaslouženého uznání nejen doma, ale i na mezinárodní scéně. A do jeho života vstoupila nová žena – při letním pobytu v Luhačovicích roku 1917 potkal Kamilu Stösslovou, sličnou dámu, která se stala až do jeho smrti zdrojem neutuchající inspirace. Hledání námětu na novou operu jej tentokrát zavedlo k ruské literatuře a není překvapivé, že jej zaujal právě příběh Káti Kabanové, hrdinky hry Bouře Alexandra Nikolajeviče Ostrovského. Vrátil se tak k velkým ženským postavám a jejich tragickým osudům, které tak mistrně ztvárnil již v Její pastorkyni a Osudu. Po neblahých zkušenostech s libretisty při vzniku Výletů páně Broučkových se rozhodl si libreto připravit z českého překladu hry sám, což se mu osvědčilo u Její pastorkyně. Rozsáhlou hru z velké části se zabývající politikou a morálním úpadkem ruské společnosti poloviny 19. století výrazně pokrátil a zredukoval počet postav. Ústředním bodem se stala nešťastně provdaná Káťa utíkající do světa fantazie, kterou pokrytectví a tlak společnosti dožene až k tragickému konci. Díky tomu Janáček vytvořil velmi intimní drama stavějící do drsného protikladu dva světy – snový svět Káti a obhroublý a tvrdý svět Kabanichy a slabošského Tichona, do nějž jen místy probleskne nezadržitelný optimismus a veselí mladičké Varvary. 

Po pražských peripetiích s provedením Výletů páně Broučkových se Janáček rozhodl zadat premiéru brněnskému Národnímu divadlu. Káťa Kabanová zde poprvé zazněla 23. listopadu 1921 v divadle Na hradbách (dnešní Mahenovo divadlo) a sklidila mimořádný úspěch, aby o rok později následovalo uvedení v Praze a v zahraničí. Ke své opeře se ještě o několik let později vrátil ze zcela praktických důvodů – aby mohly jednotlivé obrazy v 1. a 2. jednání na sebe plynule navázat, bylo třeba hudby na přestavbu. Ta zazněla poprvé při provedení v roce 1928. Shodou okolností bylo představení Káti Kabanové posledním dílem, které skladatel viděl na jevišti před svou nečekanou smrtí v srpnu 1928.

Zum ersten Mal überhaupt wird beim Festival Janáček Brno das Ensemble des schweizerischen Grand Théâtre de Genève, einer Bühne mit einer langen und reichen Tradition, zu erleben sein. Zusammen mit diesem Ensemble präsentiert sich mit einer ganz neuen Inszenierung die deutsche Regisseurin Tatjana Gürbaca, die in den letzten Jahren zu den unübersehbaren Persönlichkeiten der Opernwelt gehörte. Zu den größten Erfolgen ihrer Karriere zählen zum Beispiel Wagners Ring des Nibelungen für das Theater an der Wien (2017) oder Parsifal für die Opera Vlaanderen. Auch mit Opern tschechischer Autoren hat die Regisseurin mit ihrer geschliffenen Handschrift bereits Erfahrungen gesammelt – im Jahr 2020 studierte sie bei der English National Opera Dvořáks Rusalka ein, und mit dem Genfer Ensemble bereitet sie für das Frühjahr 2022 in einer Koproduktion mit der Deutschen Oper am Rhein auch Janáčeks Jenůfa vor. Für die musikalische Einstudierung zeichnet Tomáš Netopil verantwortlich, einer der besten tschechischen Dirigenten der Gegenwart, der sich auf unserem Festival bereits 2018 mit Janáčeks Sache Makropulos präsentieren konnte. Bei Katja Kabanowa wird das ausgezeichnete Orchestre de la Suisse Romande zu hören sein, das mit der Genfer Oper regelmäßig zusammenarbeitet. Neben der Prager Inszenierung von Bieitos Katja Kabanowa wartet auf die Festivalbesucher damit eine weitere herausragende Aufführung dieser wunderschönen Oper.

Janáčeks Lebensweg als Komponist war alles anderes als traditionell, und so kann es auch nicht überraschen, dass er sich erst im reifen Alter von fast fünfzig Jahren mit dem ersten seiner vier großen Opernwerke zu befassen begann. Die Umstände waren dafür überaus günstig. Dank der Prager und der Wiener Aufführung von Jenůfa war ihm endlich die verdiente Anerkennung nicht nur im eigenen Land, sondern auch auf der internationalen Bühne zuteil geworden. Und in sein Leben war eine neue Frau getreten – bei einem Aufenthalt in Luhačovice im Sommer 1917 hatte er Kamila Stösslová kennen gelernt, eine attraktive junge Dame, die ihm bis zu seinem Tod eine nie versiegende Inspirationsquelle sein sollte. Die Suche nach einem Sujet für die neue Oper führte ihn  diesmal zur russischen Literatur, und es kann kaum erstaunen, dass ihn gerade die Geschichte von Katja Kabanowa, der Heldin des Dramas Gewitter von Alexander Nikolajewitsch Ostrowski, ansprach. So kehrte er denn zu großen Frauenfiguren und ihren tragischen Schicksalen zurück, die er so meisterhaft bereits in Jenůfa und Schicksal geschildert hatte. Nach ernüchternden Erfahrungen mit den Librettisten bei der Entstehung der Ausflüge des Herrn Brouček beschloss er, das Libretto aus der tschechischen Übersetzung des Stückes selbst zu verfassen, was ihm bereits bei Jenůfa zum Erfolg verholfen hatte. Die umfangreiche Handlung des Theaterstücks, die in weiten Teilen die Politik und den moralischen Verfall in der russischen Gesellschaft des 19. Jahrhunderts zum Thema hat, komprimierte er deutlich und reduzierte dabei auch die Zahl der auftretenden Personen. Im Zentrum stand nun die unglücklich verheiratete Katja, die in die Welt der Fantasie entflieht, bevor die Heuchelei und der Druck der Gesellschaft sie in ihren tragischen Tod treiben. So schuf Janáček ein sehr intimes Drama, wo zwei Welten einander in schroffem Kontrast gegenüberstehen – einerseits die Traumwelt Katjas, andererseits die harte und derbe Welt der Kabanicha und des willensschwachen Tichon, in der nur an wenigen Stellen der unbezwingbare Optimismus und die Heiterkeit der jungen Warwara aufscheinen. 

Nach den Erfahrungen mit der Aufführung der Ausflüge des Herrn Brouček wählte Janáček für die Premiere das Brünner Nationaltheater. Katja Kabanowa wurde hier erstmals am 23. November 1921 im Theater auf den Schanzen (dem heutigen Mahen-Theater) gespielt und fand so großen Anklang, dass die Oper schon im darauffolgenden Jahr auch in Prag und im Ausland aufgeführt wurde. Janáček kehrte einige Jahre später noch einmal aus ganz praktischen Gründen zu dem Werk zurück – um einen fließenden Übergang zwischen den Bildern des 1. und des 2. Akts zu erreichen, musste der Umbau der Bühne musikalisch überbrückt werden. Diese Pausenmusik erklang erstmals bei einer Aufführung im Jahr 1928. Diese Vorstellung von Katja Kabanowa sollte die letzte Aufführung eines seiner Werke werden, die der Komponist vor seinem unerwarteten Tod im August 1928 noch auf der Bühne erleben konnte.
