 Two highlights of WNO's Autumn Season, From the House of the Dead and Khovanshchina, will be directed by WNO Artistic Director David Pountney and conducted by WNO Music Director Tomáš Hanus – their first collaborations for the Company.

Khovanshchina Mussorgsky | Be’ sy’n gwneud deuawd cerddorol gwych? | What makes a great artistic duo?

Based on true events, a power struggle is causing turmoil in 17th century Russia in this epic revival.

The noble Khovansky joins forces with the Old Believers as they rebel against modern reform being imposed by the Tsar. As personal and political ambitions combine and clash with both constitutional and religious forces, the struggle for power will result in grave consequences. 

WNO’s Artistic Director David Pountney and new Music Director Tomáš Hanus join forces for this revival of Musorgsky’s epic opera, addressing themes of politics, madness and death as relevant today as back in history. Combined with striking staging and powerful, unforgettable choral music, it promises to be an unmissable event in our Autumn Season.
