King Arthur has long been recognized
as one of Purcell's most colorful scores, a continuous flow of melodically rich tunes, alongside dances and choral sections where the composer innovates in brilliant and virtuoso instrumental writing. With such famous material as the scene from The Cool Engineers and the song Fairest Isle , it's no wonder King Arthur remained a much-performed masterpiece for many decades into the 18th century.

On a text by the poet John Dryden, King Arthur was created in London in 1691, four years before the death of Henry Purcell, "the British Orpheus", at the age of 36. The work will not be published until 1843.

The Gabrieli's award-winning interpretation of the King Arthur semi-opera has thrilled audiences around the world. Renowned interpreters of the music of Henry Purcell, after twenty years of concert practice and scholarship, the Gabrieli and Paul McCreesh have premiered a new production of King Arthur , breathing new life into this masterpiece of British theatre. An ensemble of nine solo singers and a small chamber orchestra, strengths that Purcell himself would have recognized, make for an intimate concert, unique and compelling, joyful, lyrical and infinitely colorful. BBC Music Magazine 's Opera and Record of the Year , and the 2019 Australian tour of the work received the Helpmann Award for Best Chamber Ensemble Performance/Instrumental Music.
