The source for the libretto, written by the author himself with the participation of V. V. Stasov, was the monument of ancient Russian literature "The Tale of Igor's Campaign", which tells about the campaign of Prince Igor against the Polovtsians.

The successful campaign (1184) of the South Russian princes against the Polovtsy prompted Igor Svyatoslavich, together with his brother Vsevolod, to undertake a new campaign next year. Together with the squad, they moved to the banks of the Don and Sala. The first meeting with the Polovtsy ended in victory for the Russians, but on the banks of the Kayala (Kagalnik) Igor was surrounded by hordes of Polovtsy surging from all sides. Most of the soldiers lay down on the battlefield, and the princes with the remnants of the squads were taken prisoner. Igor fled from captivity, leaving his son Vladimir there.

The action of the opera takes place in Putivl and in the Polovtsian camp in 1185.
The brave but short-sighted Igor goes on a campaign against the Polovtsy, despite the fact that a sudden eclipse of the sun portends his defeat. He remains deaf to the prayers of his wife, Yaroslavna, who anticipates trouble. The desire for personal glory "stands for him a sign" ...

Few of those who came from Rus' to the Kayala River managed to leave the terrible field. Hardly experiencing captivity and the shame of defeat, Igor longs for freedom. Thoughts about the misfortunes of the homeland torment him ...

Источником для либретто, написанного самим автором при участии В. В. Стасова, послужил памятник древнерусской литературы «Слово о  полку Игореве», рассказывающий о походе князя Игоря против половцев.

Удачный поход (1184) южнорусских князей на половцев побудил Игоря Святославича, вместе с братом его Всеволодом, предпринять в следующем году новый поход. Вместе с дружиной они двинулись к берегам Дона и Сала. Первая встреча с половцами окончилась победой русских, но на берегах Каяла (Кагальник) Игорь был окружен нахлынувшими со всех сторон ордами половцев. Большая часть воинов легла на поле битвы, а князья с остатками дружин взяты в плен. Из плена Игорь бежал, оставив там своего сына Владимира.

Действие оперы происходит в Путивле и в половецком стане в 1185 году.
Храбрый, но недальновидный Игорь идет в поход на половцев, несмотря на то, что внезапное затмение солнца предвещает ему поражение. Остаётся глух он и к мольбам своей жены – Ярославны, предчувствующей беду. Желание личной славы «заступает ему знамение»…

Немногие из пришедших с Руси к реке Каяле сумели уйти со страшного поля. Тяжело переживая плен и позор поражения, Игорь жаждет свободы. Мысли о несчастьях отчизны терзают его…
