With the oratorio "Rex Salomon", which premiered on August 15, 1766, Tommaso Traetta celebrated his debut as choir director (maestro di coro) at the Ospedale di S. Giovanni e Paolo, also known as the "Ospedaletto". It was one of the four Venetian residential and educational establishments for girls famous for their musical performances, most of whom came from poor and non-family backgrounds. The main task of the Tonkunstler, who was already looking back on a brilliant international career, was to revitalize a decadent institution struggling with organizational and economic problems, which he managed to do in a thoroughly sustainable way. Because "Rex Salomon" became a success and was re-enacted several times over the next eleven years. 

In 1768 Traetta moved to St. Petersburg to replace Baldassare Galuppi at the court of Tsarina Catherine II and did not return until 1775. Antonio Sacchini in turn deputized for Traetta at the Ospedaletto during his absence until 1773, when he went to London. He was succeeded by Pasquale Anfossi, who was responsible for some changes in the score of «King Solomon». The musical source for our oratorio relates to a performance in 1776, for which the role of Abiathar, originally written for an alto voice, was adapted for the agile and flexible voice of the soprano Lucia Bianchi. Mit dem am 15. August 1766 uraufgeführten Oratorium «Rex Salomon» feierte Tommaso Traetta seinen Einstand als Chorleiter (maestro di coro) am Ospedale di S. Giovanni e Paolo, auch «Ospedaletto» genannt. Es war eine der vier für ihre musikalischen Darbietungen berühmten venezianischen Wohn- und Ausbildungsstätten für Mädchen, die zumeist armen wie (außer)familiären Verhältnissen entstammten. Die Hauptaufgabe des seinerzeit bereits auf eine glanzvolle internationale Karriere zurückblickenden Tonkünstlers bestand darin, eine dekadente mit organisatorischen und wirtschaftlichen Problemen kämpfende Institution wiederzubeleben, was ihm auf eine durchaus nachhaltige Weise gelang. Denn «Rex Salomon» wurde zum Erfolg und in den folgenden elf Jahren mehrmals nachgespielt. 

1768 zog Traetta nach St. Petersburg, um Baldassare Galuppi am Hof von Zarin Katharina II. zu ersetzen, und kehrte erst 1775 zurück. Antonio Sacchini wiederum vertrat Traetta am Ospedaletto während seiner Abwesenheit bis 1773, als er nach London ging. Ihm folgte Pasquale Anfossi, der für einige Änderungen in der Partitur des «König Salomon» verantwortlich zeichnete. Die musikalische Quelle für unser Oratorium bezieht sich auf eine Aufführung des Jahres 1776, zu der etwa die ursprünglich für eine Altstimme geschriebene Rolle des Abiathar an die agile und flexible Stimme der Sopranistin Lucia Bianchi angepasst wurde. Unter der Leitung von Christophe Rousset wird ein erlesenes Ensemble aus jungen Sängerinnen der gegenwärtigen Alte-Musik- Szene, nebst dem Tiroler Vokalensemble NovoCanto und dem zuletzt in Matthesons «Boris Goudenow» gefeierten Theresia Orchestra zu erleben sein.
