Closing the old year and welcoming the new with Beethoven's Ninth and its humanitarian message, which continues to be relevant, is a good tradition at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden. In addition to this exceptional work of classical-romantic symphony, there is the choral fantasy op. 80, which Beethoven wrote for his famous musical academy in December 1808 and which would seem like a preliminary study for the 9th symphony, were it not for the extended, virtuoso piano part, which characterizes the work over larger stretches before the chorus enters with a catchy melody, similar to what would happen years later with the Ninth's »hymn of joy«.
