Vivier's 1978 opera describes a journey to the beyond. The realm of the dead is transposed into sound, with countless references. In the center of it all is the Hindu goddess Agni, encircled by mythical scenes and figures both real and fictitious, including Copernicus, Mozart, Tristan and Isolde, and Merlin the magician.
