With the word "bohemian" one can rather imagine the highest artistic society, gathering in salons and leading a beautiful life. In the 19th century, extravagant and careless poor people from among actors, artists, poets began to be called this French word. The word that can be translated as “gypsy” was introduced into wide use by Henri Murger, a talented writer who himself belonged to this circle. With his light hand, the life of Bohemia began to be perceived as something extremely attractive.

Giacomo Puccini was the second who provided Bohemia with such an enviable reputation. Half a century after the release of Murger's novel "Scenes from the Life of Bohemia", the composer used his plot for a new composition. Today Puccini's La bohème is one of the most popular operas in the world. However, Italian opera usually implies violent passions, strong characters, dramatic clashes against the backdrop of major historical events. In La bohème, although it was written by an Italian, there is none of this: it looks chamber and quiet, like an attic in Montmartre, where the heroes of La bohemia live. This is perhaps the most intimate Italian opera.

Such is the performance at the Ural Opera. A quiet love story against the backdrop of a noisy holiday was presented by the director of the play, Alexander Lebedev from St. Petersburg, in a traditional way: we have before us La Boheme, as Puccini could see it, and the careless inhabitants of the Latin Quarter themselves at the end of the 19th century. The artist Igor Ivanov looked back at the sketches for the first production, which took place in Turin in 1896, and likened the Yekaterinburg La bohème to an old Christmas card.

При слове «богема» скорее можно представить высший артистический свет, собирающийся в салонах и ведущий красивую жизнь. В XIX веке этим французским словом стали называть экстравагантных и беспечных бедняков из числа актеров, художников, поэтов. В широкий обиход слово, которое можно перевести как «цыганщина», ввел Анри Мюрже — талантливый литератор, сам принадлежавший этому кругу. С его легкой руки жизнь богемы стала восприниматься как нечто крайне притягательное.

Вторым, кто обеспечил богеме столь завидную репутацию, стал Джакомо Пуччини. Спустя полвека после выхода романа Мюрже «Сцены из жизни богемы», композитор использовал его сюжет для нового сочинения. Сегодня «Богема» Пуччини входит в число популярнейших в мире опер. Однако итальянская опера обычно подразумевает бурные страсти, сильные характеры, драматические столкновения на фоне крупных исторических событий. В «Богеме» же, хоть она и написана итальянцем, ничего этого нет: она выглядит камерной и тихой, как мансарда на Монмартре, где обитают герои «Богемы». Это, возможно, самая интимная итальянская опера.

Таков и спектакль в Урал Опере. Тихую историю любви на фоне шумного праздника режиссер спектакля, петербуржец Александр Лебедев, представил в традиционном ключе: перед нами «Богема», какой ее могли видеть и Пуччини, и сами беспечные обитатели Латинского квартала в конце XIX века. Художник Игорь Иванов оглядывался на эскизы к первой постановке, что состоялась в Турине в 1896 году, — и уподобил екатеринбургскую «Богему» старинной рождественской открытке.
