In his second to the great operas, not in terms of formal grandeur, but in terms of value and success, after Manon Lescaut Puccini again addresses the world of marginals, people on the fringes of society, the small world of attics and bistros in the suburbs, failed poets, painters or musicians, girls who dream of wealth and success in the hustle and bustle of the city. And in such a world, born from Murget's text, he finds the reasons for his ingenious and so succinct musical dramaturgy, that tension of the desire for life that permeates all his works and, finally, that melodic imagination that is always completely in harmony with the psychology of the characters and the dramaturgy of the situations.

U svojoj drugoj do  velikih opera, ne u smislu formalne veličine, već u smislu vrijednosti i uspjeha, nakon Manon Lescaut Puccini se opet obraća svijetu marginalaca, osoba na rubovima društva, malom svijetu tavana i bistroa u predgrađu, neuspjelih pjesnika, slikara ili glazbenika, djevojaka što u gradskom metežu sanjaju o bogatstvu i uspjehu. I u takvom svijetu,  poniklom iz Murgetova teksta, on pronalazi razloge svoje genijalne i tako sažete glazbene dramaturgije, onaj napon životne žudnje što prožima sva njegova djela i, naposljetku, onu melodijsku maštovitost što se uvijek posve usuglašava s psihologijom likova i dramaturgijom situacija.
