In 1893, Puccini first read Henri Murger's novel Scenes from the Life of a Bohemian. He was fascinated by the life of artists and students, which reminded him of his studies in Milan. The libretto was written by Luis Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, the best librettists of their time.

The story from the environment of poor artists and ordinary people - seamstresses, milk sellers, peddlers and buyers takes place in Paris around 1830. In four paintings we follow the fateful development of the love of the poet Rudolph and the beautiful but seriously ill seamstress Mimi and the amorous ragging of the painter Marcel and the reckless Musetta. The tragic end of the work - the death of the main heroine is typical for the veristic operas of Puccini, who had a strong dramaturgical sense for the choice of a dramatic theme and especially its musical processing. Puccini arouses strong emotions with maximum efficiency with his sharp and refined melody and composition. It combines musically a number of short, rapidly changing themes that characterize persons and moods. He works with typical motifs and reminders.

Bohéma had its world premiere on February 1, 1896 in Turin under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. She achieved greater success two months later in Palermo and launched Puccini's worldwide success.

V roce 1893 si Puccini poprvé přečetl román Henri Murgera Výjevy ze života bohémy. Zaujal ho život umělců a studentů, který mu připomínal jeho studia v Miláně. Libreto napsali Luis Illica a Giuseppe Giacosa, nejlepší libretisté své doby.

Příběh z prostředí chudých umělců a obyčejných lidí – švadlenek, prodavaček mléka, podomních obchodníků a kupců se odehrává v Paříži kolem roku 1830. Ve čtyřech obrazech sledujeme osudový vývoj lásky básníka Rudolfa a krásné, ale vážně nemocné švadlenky Mimi a milostné handrkování malíře Marcela a lehkomyslné Musetty. Tragický konec díla – smrt hlavní hrdinky je typický pro veristické opery Pucciniho, který měl silné dramaturgické cítění pro volbu dramatického tématu a hlavně jeho hudebního zpracování. Puccini vzbuzuje svou vyhraněnou až rafinovanou melodikou a kompozicí silné emoce s maximální účinností. Spojuje hudebně množství krátkých, rychle se měnících témat, která charakterizují osoby a nálady. Pracuje s příznačnými motivy a připomínkami.

Světovou premiéru měla Bohéma 1. 2. 1896 v Turíně pod taktovkou Artura Toscaniniho. Většího úspěchu dosáhla o dva měsíce později v Palermu a odstartovala světový úspěch Pucciniho.
