After realizing that the Roman Emperor Titus intends to marry Bérénice, the noblewoman Vitellia— infatuated with the ruler—decides to conspire against him. She asks Sextus, a loyal friend of Titus who is also in love with her, to kill him—but he is arrested and condemned to death by Titus. The emperor, in an act of admirable clemency, ends the opera by pardoning all the conspirators, serving as a symbol of wisdom and goodwill.

Though not quite as well-known as The Magic Flute or Don Giovanni, Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito (The Clemency of Titus) remains a major work of the composer, beautifully brought to the stage by Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek, who oversaw all aspects of the production. The excellent rapport between the orchestra and chorus of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège (under the masterful baton of Thomas Rösner), the sumptuous set design, and the carefully crafted costumes transport us into the world of the characters, embodied by a world-class cast including the splendid Patrizia Ciofi in the role of Vitellia and the renowned Leonardo Cortellazzi as Titus.

Presentation of "La Clemenza di Tito" (Mozart) at the Royal Opera of Wallonia-Liège!

In 1791, while working on Die Zauberflöte for Vienna, Mozart received a commission from Prague for an opera to celebrate the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia. The work is tied up in three weeks and the story tells how an emperor offers, by his clemency, an example of humanism to his people, a theme dear to the last Mozart.

Deploying a free song that gives pride of place to female voices, he minimizes recitatives, shows the best of himself by mastering orchestral and choral forces. The ensembles are particularly meticulous and the great arias offer this unique and limpid beauty which raises La Clemenza di Tito to the rank of absolute masterpieces.

If the theme of the opera was to suit the circumstances of a coronation, the emperor, not much of a music lover, and especially his wife, Marie-Louise of Spain , did not appreciate the work of the Viennese genius, even qualifying it as “porcheria tedesca”…!

Never performed on our stage, La Clemenza di Tito will benefit from a new production by the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège .

En 1791, alors qu’il travaille à Die Zauberflöte pour Vienne, Mozart reçoit de Prague la commande d’un opéra destiné à célébrer le couronnement de Léopold II comme roi de Bohême. Le travail est ficelé en trois semaines et l’histoire raconte comment un empereur propose, par sa clémence, un exemple d’humanisme à son peuple, un thème cher au dernier Mozart.

Déployant un chant libre qui fait la part belle aux voix féminines, il minimise les récitatifs, montre le meilleur de lui-même en maîtrisant les forces orchestrales et chorales. Les ensembles sont particulièrement soignés et les grands airs offrent cette unique et limpide beauté qui porte La Clemenza di Tito au rang des chefs-d’œuvre absolus.

Si le thème de l’opéra devait convenir aux circonstances d’un sacre, l’empereur, peu mélomane, et surtout son épouse, Marie-Louise d’Espagne, n’apprécièrent guère l’œuvre du génie viennois, la qualifiant même de « porcheria tedesca »… !

Jamais jouée sur notre scène, La Clemenza di Tito bénéficiera d’une nouvelle production de l’Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège.
