Peter Sellars, who celebrated his return to Salzburg in 1998 with the production of Olivier Messiaen's opera Saint François d'Assise at the Felsenreitschule, now directs La clemenza di Tito. In the orchestra pit is his comrade-in-arms and long-time collaborator, Greek-Russian star conductor Teodor Currentzis with his Russian choir and orchestra Music Aeterna from Perm. Sellars, who also serves as video director, and Currentzis are recording the story and developing it for their Salzburg production, creating a fresh and original contemplative restatement of Mozart's last opera through the interpolation of excerpts from his C minor Mass. The parable of rebellion and forgiveness is set in a developing country, with a brutal police presence,
