It was my first zarzuela work in Spain —I had already staged La Revoltosa and La verbena de la Paloma, but curiously it had been in Havana and Buenos Aires—, so it was my presentation in Madrid. Although it was commissioned by the then superintendent of this theater, José Antonio Campos, with this production I was closer, if possible, to the figure of my uncle Luis Sagi Vela, for whom Sorozábal, Ramos de Castro and Cuadrado Carreño created the character of Joaquín. This title perfectly reflects the pre-war atmosphere that was breathed in the society of the time, with constant allusions to class conflicts. Reference is made to other composers and it is surprising that a Basque from head to toe, such as Sorozábal, managed to capture with such perfection and clarity the spirit of a modern Madrid and the essence of an updated casticism. This confirms the open and inclusive mentality of the Spanish capital. The production has done nothing more than rotate since that Friday, November 2, 1990. I think it is one of the productions of the Teatro de la Zarzuela that has been seen the most. For me, each rerun has been like the first time. It is tremendously exciting to see how the characters come to life. And now —despite the bad times that we have to live through— seeing them reborn makes me think, makes me feel, that it is not just another revival, but the most emotional and exciting of the revivals on the 30th anniversary of that first time… The rest is part of our theatrical history! - 𝙀𝙢𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙤 𝙎𝙖𝙜𝙞 More information:https://teatrodelazarzuela.mcu.es/es/...
