München 1775: Zu Karneval werden im 18. Jahrhundert üblicherweise unzählige Opern in Auftrag gegeben und aufgeführt, die Städte sind kurz vor der Fastenzeit in Feierlaune. Daher erhält Mozart während seines München-Aufenthalts 1775 vom Hoftheater-Intendanten Joseph Anton von Seeau den Auftrag, für die dortige Saison ein Dramma giocoso bzw. eine Opera buffa zu verfassen. Er bedient sich für "La finta giardiniera" einer Textvorlage, die wahrscheinlich von Giuseppe Petrosellini stammt, der auch für Cimarosa, Rossini und Salieri Libretti schrieb. Entsprechend der Gattung gibt es in dieser Oper neben Buffa-Partien (Serpetta, Nardo, Podestà) auch halbernste Partien (Sandrina, Belfiore, Arminda) und sogar eine reine Seria-Partie (Ramiro). Dies bietet dem jungen Mozart eine große Bandbreite an musikalischen Techniken und Gattungen, die er während der drei Akte voll ausschöpft.
Die Handlung ist eine typisch verzwickte Liebesgeschichte von sieben Personen, bestehend aus Verwirrungen, unglücklicher und unerkannter Liebe in den verschiedensten Konstellationen; dargestellt im klassischen Idyll des 18. Jahrhunderts, dem Garten: Alle Hauptpersonen befinden sich auf dem Landgut von Don Anchise. Während dieser versucht, seine heiratsfreudige Nichte Arminda mit dem Grafen Belfiore zu verkuppeln, hat er selbst nur Augen für die Gärtnerin und Stallmagd Sandrina. Was niemand weiß: Diese ist in Wirklichkeit die Gräfin Violante Onesti und auf der Suche nach ihrem Geliebten, mit dem sie sich im Streit entzweit hat. Ausgerechnet Belfiore entpuppt sich als der verschwundene Herzensbrecher. Das Dienstmädchen Serpetta dagegen wagt erfolglos Annäherungsversuche an Don Anchise. Und während Sandrinas Diener Roberto (unter dem falschen Namen Nardo) mit stupider Hartnäckigkeit um die Gunst von Serpetta buhlt, möchte der von Arminda verlassene Don Ramiro vor verzweifelter Liebe vergehen. Die Enthüllung von Sandrinas wahrer Identität bringt erst recht Verwirrung und Dunkel ins Labyrinth der Gefühle, bis das Paar Violante und Belfiore sich schließlich füreinander entscheidet. Daraufhin ordnet Don Anchise mit aller Autorität die Tripelhochzeit zwischen den beiden, Ramiro und Arminda sowie Roberto und Serpetta an, sich selbst auf die nächste Dienerin vertröstend.
Für Dorris Dörrie war klar, daß etwas passieren mußte. Denn eins zu eins konnte eine noch ins Spätbarock verweisende Liebeständelei wie "La finta giardiniera" nicht in die Jetztzeit übertragen werden. Schließlich würde sich ein Zuschauer von heute bei allzu viel Puderquaste und Perückenpracht trotz Mozarts wundervoller Musik nur langweilen. Weitgehende Abstraktion wiederum bekäme jedoch der Stringenz der ohnehin verworrenen Handlung nicht. Also entschloß sie sich für Humor und kombinierte das Anachronistische mit dem Alltäglichen, wohl wissend, daß sie damit manch skurrilen Effekt provozieren würde. Aus den Gärten des Barocks wurde ein Gartencenter, aus dem Idyll der Vergangenheit ein Bonsai-Paradies der Gegenwart. Dörrie verzichtet jedoch nicht vollständig auf die historischen Andeutungen, sondern kontrastiert geschickt die manierierten Kostüme des traditionellen Opernverständnisses mit den Anzug-Klischees des modernen Regietheaters, um aus der Quersumme eine amüsante Komödie zu entwickeln. Und tatsächlich, die Rechnung geht auf: "La finta giardiniera", von Mozart 1775 im Eiltempo für den Münchner Karneval geschrieben, verändert sich vom verwirrenden Liebesstück in ein kurzweiliges Bühnenspektakel, das sowohl das Publikum der Premiere im Januar 2006 am Salzburger Landestheater, als auch die gestrengen Besucher der Festspiele mitzureißen verstand. Dazu trug nicht nur die Inszenierung, sondern auch das ausgezeichnete Ensemble und das Mozarteum-Orchester Salzburg unter der Leitung von Ivor Bolton bei.

Munich 1775: In the 18th century, countless operas are usually commissioned and performed for carnival, and the cities are in a party mood shortly before Lent. Therefore, during his stay in Munich in 1775, Mozart was commissioned by the court theater director Joseph Anton von Seeau to compose a dramma giocoso or an opera buffa for the season there. For "La finta giardiniera" he uses a text that probably comes from Giuseppe Petrosellini, who also wrote libretti for Cimarosa, Rossini and Salieri. The plot is a typically tricky love story of seven characters, consisting of confusion, unhappy and unrecognized love in the most diverse constellations; presented in the classic 18th century idyll, the garden: all the main characters are on Don Anchise's estate. While he is trying to match up his marriage-loving niece Arminda with Count Belfiore, he himself only has eyes for the gardener and stable maid Sandrina. What nobody knows: This is in reality the Countess Violante Onesti and is looking for her lover, with whom she fell out in a quarrel. Ironically, Belfiore turns out to be the missing heartbreaker. The maid Serpetta, on the other hand, dares unsuccessful advances to Don Anchise. And while Sandrina's servant Roberto (under the false name Nardo) courts Serpetta's favor with stupid obstinacy, Don Ramiro, abandoned by Arminda, wants to die of desperate love. The revelation of Sandrina's true identity only adds confusion and darkness to the labyrinth of feelings until the couple Violante and Belfiore finally decide for each other. For Dorris Dörrie it was clear that something had to happen. Because a love affair like "La finta giardiniera", which still points to the late baroque, could not be transferred one to one to the present day. After all, today's audience would only get bored with too many powder puffs and wigs, despite Mozart's wonderful music. Extensive abstraction, on the other hand, would not suit the stringency of the already confused plot. So she opted for humor and combined the anachronistic with the everyday, knowing full well that she would provoke some bizarre effects by doing so.
