An opera as topical and oppressive as the socio-political realities of the present. With the 'strokes of fate' in the overture to La forza del destino – the power of fate – Giuseppe Verdi leaves no doubt about the drastic nature of his material and catapults his audience into the heart of the fatal events of an operatic thriller. Leonora's father dies right at the beginning through a tragic shot from the gun of Alvaro, his daughter's lover. But that's just the beginning of this fast-paced plot. Even as he dies, the father curses his daughter and the lovers flee, lose and repeatedly find themselves in the grotesque turmoil of war - always pursued by Leonora's brother Carlo.

Until fate uses its inexorable power one last time at the end of the four acts, numerous coincidences drive the protagonists through a panorama of uninhibited societies in precarious circumstances. The fact that both the military and the church get their fat in the middle of this painting of chaos keeps this masterpiece, which is also impressive musically, dewy to this day. At the Kassel State Theater, the 'cursed opera' is being staged by a director who is going into rehearsals this season, well armed with large, monumental material: Valentin Schwarz is staging the Ring des Nibelungen at the Bayreuth Festival in 2022 and is now making his debut with La forza del destino at the Kassel State Theater. The musical direction has
the General Music Director: Francesco Angelico.

Eine Oper, so aktuell und so beklemmend wie die gesellschaftspolitischen Realitäten der Gegenwart. Schon mit den ‚Schicksalsschlägen‘ in der Ouvertüre von La forza del destino – der Macht des Schicksals – lässt Giuseppe Verdi keinen Zweifel an der Drastik seines Stoffs und katapultiert sein Publikum mitten in die fatalen Geschehnisse eines Opernthrillers. Leonoras Vater stirbt gleich zu Beginn durch einen sich tragisch lösenden Schuss aus der Waffe Alvaros, des Liebhabers seiner Tochter. Doch das ist erst der Anfang dieses rasanten Plots. Noch im Sterben verflucht der Vater seine Tochter und das Liebespaar flieht, verliert und findet sich immer wieder in den grotesken Wirren des Krieges – stets verfolgt durch Leonoras Bruder Carlo.

Bis das Schicksal seine unerbittliche Macht am Ende der vier Akte noch ein letztes Mal ausspielen wird, treiben zahlreiche Fügungen die Protagonist:innen durch ein Panorama enthemmter Gesellschaften in prekären Umständen. Dass mitten in diesem Gemälde des Chaos sowohl das Militär als auch die Kirche ihr Fett abkriegen, hält dieses auch musikalisch beeindruckende Meisterwerk bis heute taufrisch. Am Staatstheater Kassel wird die ‚verfluchte Oper‘ von einem Regisseur inszeniert, der in dieser Spielzeit, bestens mit großen, monumentalen Stoffen gewappnet, in die Probenarbeit geht: Valentin Schwarz inszeniert 2022 den Ring des Nibelungen bei den Bayreuther Festspielen und debütiert nun mit La forza del destino am Staatstheater Kassel. Die musikalische Leitung hat
der Generalmusikdirektor inne: Francesco Angelico.
