Giuseppe Verdi's opera "The Force of Destiny" was first performed in St. Petersburg in 1862 and presented seven years later in its revised final version at La Scala in Milan. With its wealth of enchanting melodies, the work offers a feast of beautiful voices.

The unhappy love story between the Spanish noblewoman Leonora and Alvaro, who is descended from the Incas, takes place in Spain and Italy: Because Leonora's father rejects the relationship with Alvaro, the two want to flee, but are discovered. When Alvaro throws away his pistol, a shot is fired and kills Leonora's father. On the run, the two lose each other. Leonora's brother Carlos is looking for them to avenge their father's death.

Leonora travels through the country disguised as a man and is accepted into the hermitage of a Franciscan monastery. Alvaro is now under the name of Herreros as a captain in the Spanish service in Italy. He saves an officer; it is Carlos who - also under a false name - fights against Austria. The two swear eternal friendship to each other.

Alvaro is badly wounded. When Carlos discovers a picture of Leonora on him, he recognizes his father's murderer. Alvaro goes to the monastery and finds Leonora there. There is a duel between Carlos and Alvaro; Carlos is mortally wounded, but stabs his sister Leonora with his last breath. Alvaro stays behind alone.
