That “La tabernera del puerto” by Pablo Sorozábal is a masterpiece is no longer questioned by anyone. Some consider it -no doubt, rightly- something like "La Traviata" of the zarzuela, while others consider that we are before the last great zarzuela in history. It is a lyrical drama in which a kind and in love innkeeper, an authoritarian and violent father are portrayed. Added to them is the envy of the women of the town, who are unaware of Marola's past and see a danger in her youth and beauty. Of course, the plot has the passionate love of a boy, capable of anything for his lover, and the typical atmosphere of a small seaport where the drama arrives.

The action takes place in the port of the imaginary city of Cantabreda, in the north of Spain, on a contemporary date of the premiere (in 1936).

Que “La tabernera del puerto” de Pablo Sorozábal es una obra maestra ya no lo cuestiona nadie. Algunos la consideran -sin duda, con razón- algo así como “La Traviata” de la zarzuela, mientras otros estiman que estamos ante la última gran zarzuela de la historia. Se trata de un drama lírico en el que están retratados una amable y enamorada tabernera, un padre autoritario y violento. A ellos se suma la envidias de las mujeres del pueblo, que desconocen el pasado de Marola y ven en su juventud y belleza un peligro. Por su puesto la trama cuenta con el amor apasionado de un muchacho, capaz de todo por su enamorada, y el ambiente típico de un pequeño puerto marinero al que llega el drama.

La acción se desarrolla en el puerto de la ciudad imaginaria de Cantabreda, en el norte de España, en fecha contemporánea al estreno (el año 1936).
