“It so happens that the heroines of the three most important opera masterpieces that form the foundation of this genre are women who, on the one hand, can be a model of character, perseverance, and faithfulness to their feelings, and on the other hand, their social status does not differ from that of ordinary prostitutes. This blunt term can cause outrage no less than that surrounding the scandalous premieres of these works. The stage births of the aforementioned works were accompanied by indignation at the presentation of the fate of the "Fallen Woman" to the elegant opera audience.

We wish to focus attention on the fascinating paradox of combining in one personality the high moral standards of Traviata, Butterfly and Carmen with their low level of sexual purity. All of them benefited from property to varying degrees by satisfying male desire. Each faced a choice between continuing to engage in commercial sex or staying true to their unexpected feelings. Each of them chose a noble solution and each of them paid for it with their lives. The tragic finale of these three operas moves countless audiences, the more so because in the first scenes we met our protagonists in unmerciful situations.

On the contrary. At first, we tend to be lightly contemptuous of them. Amused Violetta in the first act is masterfully presented by the composer as a nonchalant, spoiled woman occupied with glitz and flirting. Only in the aria does it reveal its true face and extremely dramatic sound. Thanks to the gradual revealing of the advantages of her character to us, the composer allows us, together with Alfred's father, to be surprised in the second act by the nobility of the person we met as a woman of light manners. Her heroic decision to renounce personal happiness in the name of the honor and good of her beloved man's family is as awe-inspiring as Germont's, and we are inspired by the same feeling of empathy. We love Violetta in the final, and her past when she traded the body doesn't matter to us. "

„Tak się dziwnie składa, że bohaterkami trzech najważniejszych arcydzieł operowych tworzących fundament tego gatunku są kobiety, które z jednej strony mogą być wzorem charakteru, wytrwałości, wierności wobec swoich uczuć, a z drugiej ich status społeczny nie odbiega od zwykłych prostytutek. To dosadne określenie może wywoływać oburzenie nie mniejsze niż to, które otaczało skandalizujące premiery tych utworów. Narodzinom scenicznym wspomnianych dzieł towarzyszyło oburzenie z powodu pokazywania eleganckiej publiczności operowej losów »kobiety upadłej«.

My pragniemy skupić uwagę na fascynującym paradoksie połączenia w jednej osobowości wysokiego poziomu moralnego Traviaty, Butterfly i Carmen z ich niskim poziomem seksualnej czystości. Wszystkie w różnym stopniu czerpały korzyści majątkowe zaspokajając męskie pożądanie. Każda z nich stanęła w obliczu wyboru pomiędzy dalszym uprawianiem komercyjnego seksu, a dochowaniem wierności swoim nieoczekiwanym uczuciom. Każda z nich wybrała rozwiązanie szlachetne i każda z nich zapłaciła za to życiem. Tragiczny finał tych trzech oper porusza niezliczone rzesze widzów tym bardziej, że w pierwszych scenach poznaliśmy nasze bohaterki w sytuacjach nie wzbudzających litości.

Wręcz przeciwnie. Jesteśmy początkowo skłonni do lekkiej pogardy wobec nich. Rozbawiona Violetta w pierwszym akcie jest przez kompozytora po mistrzowsku przedstawiona jako nonszalancka, zepsuta kobieta zajęta blichtrem i flirtami. Dopiero w arii ujawnia swoje prawdziwe oblicze i niezwykle dramatyczne brzmienie. Dzięki stopniowemu odsłanianiu przed nami zalet jej charakteru kompozytor pozwala, byśmy w drugim akcie wspólnie z ojcem Alfreda zostali zaskoczeni szlachetnością osoby, którą poznaliśmy jako kobietę lekkich obyczajów. Jej heroiczna decyzja wyrzeczenia się osobistego szczęścia w imię honoru i dobra rodziny ukochanego mężczyzny wprawia nas w podziw tak jak Germonta i budzi się w nas to samo uczucie empatii. W finale kochamy Violettę, a jej przeszłość, kiedy handlowała ciałem, nie ma dla nas znaczenia".
