Ah, della traviata sorridi al desio!" “Ah, smile on a lost soul!” - sings the unfortunate Violetta, a Parisian courtesan, anticipating an imminent death. This is the only place in the opera La Traviata where the word that Giuseppe Verdi put on the title page of his most famous work is heard. Violetta's request is addressed to God; world, secular society will not smile at the “stumbled”. The title of La Traviata is already a polemical challenge, and for a person in the middle of the 19th century, when the opera was written, it is an unprecedented scandal: a lady of the demi-monde, in other words, an expensive cocotte, on the opera proscenium, in a recognizable modern setting! Dumas, the son whose "Lady of the Camellias" inspired Verdi to create his masterpiece, admitted that the composer immortalized the story of the famous bohemian beauty to a much greater extent than he himself. Both the writer and the composer knew what they wrote about: in the image of Marguerite Gauthier, Dumas' lover, Marie Duplessis, was guessed, in the story of Violetta Valery and Alfred Germont, the family conflict of Verdi himself, who chose an opera singer with sick lungs, was reflected in his life. When Giuseppe and Giuseppina watched a play based on Dumas' novel together, both were shocked to tears. Today, audiences around the world are crying over La Traviata.
Self-sacrifice is one of the central themes of romanticism, and the plots of 19th century operas are inconceivable without selfless women. They leave their family and homeland, jump from rocks, put themselves under a knife, etc., but their exploits are always performed for the sake of a loved one. In the gallery of sacrificial heroines, Violetta Valerie stands apart, as she gives everything she has for the good of a complete stranger to her: a higher deed is hard to imagine. La Traviata - the lost, stumbled Violetta - unwittingly blocked the path to the happiness of a young woman and now must free this path. The last step of the “traviata” on the “crooked path” of her life is the step of a real martyr, and the “fallen one” takes off to an unattainable moral height. Looking at La Traviata from this point of view, one can see in it not only a story of doomed love, beautiful to the point of sentimentality,
At the Mariinsky Theatre, the opera about the tragedy of an unhealthy woman in an unhealthy society was staged by women: director Claudia Solti, production designer and costume designer Isabella Bywater, lighting designer Jennifer Shriver. They likened the world to a huge colorful carousel; people ride in this carousel, the time allotted to them flies, pictures of their lives flash by. Someone prefers to “roll away” without regaining consciousness, but there are those who are able to stop her run. The performance will appeal to both lovers of traditional La Traviata (what only outfits and hairstyles are worth!), and those who expect a special opinion from the director: the culture of behavior in a Parisian salon during the Second Empire will remind you of current club mores, and in many strokes of the production, subtle directorial irony over the genre. Это единственное место в опере «Травиата», где звучит то слово, которое Джузеппе Верди вынес на титульный лист своего самого известного сочинения. Просьба Виолетты обращена к Богу; мир, светское общество не улыбнется «оступившейся». Уже название «Травиаты» – полемический вызов, а для человека середины XIX века, когда опера была написана, – небывалый скандал: дама полусвета, проще говоря – дорогостоящая кокотка, на оперной авансцене, в узнаваемой современной обстановке! Дюма-сын, чья «Дама с камелиями» вдохновила Верди на создание его шедевра, признавался, что композитор обессмертил историю знаменитой богемной красавицы в гораздо большей степени, нежели он сам. И литератор, и композитор знали, о чем писали: в образе Маргариты Готье угадывалась возлюбленная Дюма – Мари Дюплесси, в истории Виолетты Валери и Альфреда Жермона отразился семейный конфликт самого Верди, избравшего спутницей жизни оперную певицу с больными легкими. Когда Джузеппе и Джузеппина вместе смотрели пьесу по роману Дюма, оба были потрясены до слез. Сегодня по всему миру зрители плачут над «Травиатой».
Самопожертвование – одна из центральных тем романтизма, и сюжеты опер XIX века немыслимы без самоотверженных женщин. Они бросают семью и родину, прыгают со скал, подставляются под нож и т. п., но их подвиги всегда совершаются ради любимого. В галерее жертвенных героинь Виолетта Валери стоит особняком, поскольку она отдает всё, что у нее есть, ради блага совершенно незнакомого ей человека: более высокий поступок трудно себе представить. Травиата – заблудшая, оступившаяся Виолетта – невольно перегородила путь к счастью юной женщины и теперь должна этот путь освободить. Последний шаг «травиаты» на «кривой дорожке» ее жизни – шаг настоящей мученицы, и «павшая» взлетает на недосягаемую нравственную высоту. Всматриваясь в «Травиату» под этим углом зрения, можно увидеть в ней не только красивую до сентиментальности историю обреченной любви, не только социальную критику, которая обличает двойную мораль и общественные предрассудки, но и драму тяжелейшей внутренней борьбы, откуда героиня, несмотря на гибель, выходит победительницей.
В Мариинском театре оперу о трагедии нездоровой женщины в нездоровом обществе поставили женщины: режиссер Клаудиа Шолти, художник-постановщик и художник по костюмам Изабелла Байвотер, художник по свету Дженнифер Шривер. Мир они уподобили огромной пестрой карусели; в этой карусели едут люди, летит отведенное им время, мелькают картины их жизни. Кто-то предпочитает «откататься», не приходя в сознание, но есть и те, кто способен остановить ее бег. Спектакль понравится как любителям традиционных «Травиат» (чего стоят одни наряды и прически!), так и тем, кто ждет особого мнения от режиссера: культура поведения в парижском салоне времен Второй империи напомнит о нынешних клубных нравах, а во многих штрихах постановки улавливается тонкая режиссерская ирония над жанром. Но главное, ради чего стоит идти на «Травиату», – это музыка Верди с ее головокружительным вальсовым ритмом, с ее прославленными ариями и дуэтами, с ее пронзительными лиризмом, теплом и состраданием.
