“Who is Violetta for us? Violetta is a character as vast as her song that represents her, and we could find many ways to describe her. In this show I started from the last words of Lella Costa's beautiful work on Traviata: Violetta is a beautiful little girl. She is the story of a girl who has an enormous and difficult to sustain future, which elevates her above all of her but overwhelms her.
Simple and human story, which probes the soul of a character rather than narrating an adventure: this is Traviata for us, this is the reason why it is not "contemporary", but out of time.
The work is initially set in an unreal film set: it is a set of Violetta's soul, it is a large desolate valley covered by a light carpet: inside and outside are no longer divisible, they come together, they merge. We are therefore in an abstract place yet with concrete and realistic references, out of time.
For me it is unthinkable to place the work in a precise and recognizable historical era. Only Violetta lives and will live in her world of hers, with her nineteenth-century costume, of which she - little by little - she will get rid of. We also thought of including some video projections: the first that will reproduce the scenes that will be shot on the set, the second more intimate and familiar. "
The image we have chosen to tell Traviata - the director also explains - evokes the hands of a little girl who is making "loves me not loves me" with a daisy. It is the gesture that made Violetta famous and that allowed us to say that she is, yes, Violetta, the prostitute, the kept one, but the heart of her gesture is young, spontaneous. And in a moment of the opera we will be able to see, through her, even that little girl that she once was ".
