Giuseppe Verdi's masterpiece asks about love and freedom in the face of oppressive double standards and the brevity of existence.

The young Alfredo Germont and Violetta Valéry, a prostitute from Parisian high society, set up a quiet life for two in the country. But Alfredo's father forces Violetta to give up the relationship, even though he knows about her terminal illness. He fears for his family's reputation. After desperate struggles, Violetta agrees. When Alfredo's father withdraws his fatal demand, it is too late: Violetta dies in Alfredo's arms.

A courtesan as the protagonist? That was heavy stuff for the audience at the premiere in 1853. But soon ›La traviata‹ became one of the most popular operas of all.

Due to the current Corona situation, the work will initially be performed in a concert version. It is planned to catch up on the production by the internationally renowned director Nigel Lowery in one of the coming seasons.

Der junge Alfredo Germont und Violetta Valéry, eine Prostituierte der Pariser High Society, richten sich verliebt ein ruhiges Leben zu zweit auf dem Lande ein. Doch Alfredos Vater zwingt Violetta, die Verbindung aufzugeben, obwohl er von ihrer unheilbaren Krankheit weiß. Er fürchtet um den Ruf seiner Familie. Nach verzweifeltem Ringen willigt Violetta ein. Als Alfredos Vater seine fatale Forderung zurückzieht, ist es zu spät: Violetta stirbt in Alfredos Armen.

Eine Kurtisane als Protagonistin? Das war für das Publikum der Uraufführung im Jahre 1853 starker Tobak. Doch schon bald wurde ›La traviata‹ zu einer der beliebtesten Opern überhaupt.

Wegen der aktuellen Corona Situation kommt das Werk zunächst in einer konzertanten Version zur Aufführung. Es ist geplant, die Inszenierung des international gefragten Regisseurs Nigel Lowery in einer der kommenden Spielzeiten nachzuholen.
