One of the most popular and famous operas to date. The libretto is based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas son "The Lady of the Camellias" and tells about Violetta Valeri, a woman rejected by society ("La Traviata" - in Italian "fallen", "lost").
The world premiere took place in 1853 in Venice. But then it was not appreciated by either the audience or the critics. There were two reasons for the failure: for the first time, not a historical or mythological figure, but a modern Parisian courtesan became the protagonist, and secondly, the characters themselves were contemporaries of the audience in the stalls. The opera was about them.
