Perhaps the best-known duet in all of operatic literature comes from Léo Delibe's opera Lakmé : the "flower duet" for soprano and mezzo-soprano is not only popular in the concert hall, but has also become a real hit through its use in commercials and films. But Lakmé's «bell aria» is also one of the showpieces by famous vocal virtuosos. The title role of the opera is perfect for one of the outstanding French voices of our time: Sabine Devieilhe's soprano combines crystal-clear lightness of coloratura with colourful, lyrical warmth. At the Zurich Opera House she has been celebrated as the title character in Donizetti's Fille du régiment and as Sophie in Strauss' Rosenkavalier . On their 2017 albumMirages she has taken up the highlights from Delibes Lakmé in an exemplary manner and is dedicated to French composers of the late 19th century who were inspired by the musical coloring of distant countries. Leo Délibes celebrated great successes in Paris as a ballet composer with Coppélia and his main work Lakmé . Lakmewas premiered at the Opéra-Comique in 1883 and is about the unhappy love between the British officer Gérald and Lakmé, the daughter of the Brahma priest Nilakantha, who was fighting against the colonial rulers. In the concert performance of this opera, Edgardo Rocha can be heard alongside Sabine Devieilhe. The highly regarded bel canto tenor has already appeared in numerous Rossini roles at the Zurich Opera House, including the title role in Le Comte Ory , Narciso in Il turco in Italia and Cavaliere Belfiore in Il viaggio a Reims . With the bass-baritone Philippe Sly as Nilakantha and the baritone Björn Bürger as Frédéric, two very discoverable voices of the younger generation can also be heard for the first time at the Zurich Opera House.
