Opéra en trois actes.  Livret d'Edmond Gondinet et Philippe Gille d'après le roman de Pierre Loti Rarahu, idylle polynésienne. Créé le 14 avril 1883 à l'Opéra-Comique de Paris.

Gérald, un officier de l’armée britannique, découvre au hasard de ses pérégrinations une jeune hindoue, Lakmé. Malgré l’interdit, ils tombent amoureux – au grand dam du père de la jeune fille, le sévère brahmane Nilakantha.

Sur cette trame romanesque aux couleurs pleines d’exotisme, Léo Delibes compose l’une des partitions les plus enchanteresses de tout le XIXe siècle français, et des plus justement célèbres. Outre  «  l’air des clochettes  », Delibes enchaîne en effet les mélodies les plus envoûtantes pour brosser ce tableau d’une Inde de légende, où le rêve d’amour se heurte aux préjugés culturels et sociaux, et à la brutalité du monde occidental.

Nous y retrouverons l’éblouissante Kathryn Lewek (Lucia ici même la saison dernière) et Thomas Bettinger, dirigés par Jacques Lacombe, l’un des plus grands spécialistes de l’opéra français. Une nouvelle mise en scène signée Laurent Pelly en coproduction avec l’OpéraComique et l’Opéra National du Rhin.

Gérald, a British army officer, happens upon a young Hindu, Lakmé, during his travels. Despite the prohibition, they fall in love – much to the chagrin of the girl's father, the stern Brahmin Nilakantha.

 Based on this fanciful plot doused in exoticism, Léo Delibes composed one of the most enchanting French scores of the entire 19th century, and one of the most deservedly famous. In addition to the "Bell Song", Delibes employs the most bewitching melodies to paint this picture of a mythical India, where the dream of love collides with cultural and social prejudices, and the brutality of the Western world.

Here, we find the incredible Kathryn Lewek (our Lucia in the last season) and Thomas Bettinger, directed by Jacques Lacombe, one of the great specialists of French opera. A new staging by Laurent Pelly, in co-production with the Opéra-Comique and the National Opera of the Rhine.
