Orlando, a knight in Charlemagne's entourage, covets the Chinese princess Angelica, who, however, has fallen in love with the Saracen Medoro. When Orlando found out that Angelica was in safe hands, he lost his mind and became mad with jealousy...
This is what Ludovico Ariosto tells in his epic Orlando furioso , which is one of the most important texts in Italian literature.

The young Pietro Metastasio interwoven this work with motifs from Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando innamorato and used it to create his first opera libretto. Sensuous, delicate arias alternate with dramatically expressive recitatives in the setting by Nicola Porpora, which fell into oblivion after its premiere in Naples in 1720.

In 2021, the opera rarity was rediscovered by the Festival della Valle d'Itria, which stands for rarely performed baroque operas and bel canto.
The director and set designer Gianluca Falaschi shifts the action to a lavishly laid table where the emotions of the protagonists boil over. For the performance series in Mainz, Porpora's opera is dramaturgically enriched with contemporary questions on the classic canon of love and relationships.

Der junge Pietro Metastasio hat dieses Werk mit Motiven aus Matteo Maria Boiardos Orlando innamorato verwoben und daraus sein erstes Opernlibretto geschaffen. Sinnlich zarte Arien wechseln mit dramatisch expressiven Rezitativen in der Vertonung von Nicola Porpora, die nach ihrer Uraufführung 1720 in Neapel in Vergessenheit geriet.

2021 wurde die Opernrarität vom Festival della Valle d’Itria wiederentdeckt, das für selten gespielte Barockopern und Belcanto steht.
Der Regisseur und Ausstatter Gianluca Falaschi verlagert die Handlung an eine üppig gedeckte Festtafel, an der die Emotionen der Protagonisten hochkochen. Für die Aufführungsserie in Mainz wird Porporas Oper dramaturgisch mit heutigen Fragen an den klassischen Themenkanon Liebe und Beziehung angereichert.
