El Lazarillo, más allá de la aridez y los siglos

En una España árida, azotada por un sol sofocante, las pocas lluvias son torrenciales y desbordan los cauces de los ríos provocando inundaciones. La ignorancia, el fanatismo y la miseria son explotadas por seres que luchan por un bocado mientras tratan de mantener intacta su falsa honra. En este panorama, nacer en un río, hijo de un ladrón y de la concubina de un negro, no es un buen comienzo. Lazarillo, el niño, vaga entre pueblos ruinosos, llenos de esqueletos de edificaciones que alguna vez fueron sueños de progreso. Pasa de mano en mano, sirviendo a amos y señores, aprendiendo de ellos duras lecciones de cómo sobrevivir.

Pero, ¿en qué año estamos?, ¿Es el 1550 ó el 2050?, ¿todo esto es antes o después del desastre climático? “Mirar a Lazarillo es acariciar el pasado con el alivio de haberlo superado y palidecer ante la advertencia del futuro que nos desvela”.

Estas reflexiones del director de escena Ricardo Campelo nos sitúan -y, por su distopía o acronía, nos inquietan y nos atraen- ante una versión sorprendente del clásico Lazarillo de Tormes, convertido por la veterana y aplaudida compañía Teatro Xtremo en una atractiva ópera de cámara con música de David del Puerto (Premio Nacional de Música 2005) y texto de Martín Llade (Premio Ondas por Sinfonía de la mañana, en Radio Clásica) que mantiene el grueso de las expresiones originales -“Cómelo, que el ratón cosa limpia es”…- para un cuarteto de cantantes y siete instrumentos de tímbrica rica y variada que nos cuentan un viejo / nuevo Lazarillo retransmitido en directo con cámara de vídeo y multitud de efectos sonoros que vivifican a un clásico de la literatura española. Porque, sí, es cierto: vendrá el 2050 y Lazarillo seguirá estando vivo. Seguro.

El Lazarillo , beyond aridity and centuries

In an arid Spain, lashed by a suffocating sun, the few rains are torrential and overflow the riverbeds causing flooding. Ignorance, fanaticism and misery are exploited by beings who fight for a bite while trying to keep their false honor intact. In this scenario, being born in a river, the son of a thief and a black man's concubine, is not a good start. Lazarillo, the child, wanders among ruinous towns, full of skeletons of buildings that were once dreams of progress. He passes from hand to hand, serving masters and lords, learning from them hard lessons on how to survive.

But what year are we in? Is it 1550 or 2050? Is this all before or after the climate disaster? "Looking at Lazarillo is caressing the past with the relief of having overcome it and turning pale before the warning of the future that it reveals to us."

These reflections by the stage director Ricardo Campelo situate us -and, due to their dystopia or achrony, disturb and attract us- before a surprising version of the classic Lazarillo de Tormes , converted by the veteran and acclaimed company Teatro Xtremo into an attractive chamber opera with music by David del Puerto (National Music Award 2005) and text by Martín Llade (Ondas Award for Sinfonía de la mañana, on Radio Clásica) that maintains the bulk of the original expressions -“Eat it, the mouse is a clean thing”…- for a quartet of singers and seven instruments of rich and varied timbre that tell us an old / new Lazarillo broadcast live with a video camera and a multitude of sound effects that enliven a classic of Spanish literature. Because, yes, it's true: 2050 will come and Lazarillo will still be alive. Sure.
