Die Liebe des Grafen Almaviva zu seiner Gattin ist im Laufe der Ehejahre etwas erkaltet. Sein Begehren gilt jetzt einzig den jungen Mädchen. Er lässt nichts unversucht, die geplante Hochzeit seines Kammerdieners Figaro mit der hübschen Zofe Susanna zu verzögern. Das Maß an gesponnenen Intrigen wird durch Marcellina und Bartolo nicht gerade verringert, die ihrerseits alte Rechnungen zu begleichen haben. Und doch wird am Schluss allen Beteiligten Versöhnung zuteil. Mozart und Da Ponte schufen nach Vorlage Beaumarchais einen Geniestreich der Opernliteratur, der nicht nur verborgene Beziehungskisten seiner Protagonisten ans Licht führt, sondern auch die Entmachtung eines Fürsten zugunsten einer gerechteren Weltordnung vorschlägt, ohne je die Balance zwischen Humor und Tiefsinn zu verlieren.

Count Almaviva's love for his wife has cooled somewhat over the course of the years of marriage. His desire is now only for the young girls. He leaves no stone unturned to delay the planned marriage of his valet Figaro to the pretty maid Susanna. The level of spun intrigue isn't exactly reduced by Marcellina and Bartolo, who in turn have old scores to settle. And yet, in the end, all those involved are reconciled. Based on Beaumarchai's model, Mozart and Da Ponte created a stroke of genius in opera literature that not only brings to light the hidden relationships between its protagonists, but also proposes the disempowerment of a prince in favor of a more just world order, without ever losing the balance between humor and profundity.
