Opera-bouffe in four acts on a libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte after Le Mariage de Figaro by Beaumarchais premiered in Vienna in 1786.

It was Mozart who proposed to Da Ponte to adapt the firebrand that Beaumarchais had just had performed in Paris in 1784: The Marriage of Figaro , which Emperor Joseph II had banned in Vienna. But by removing the political texts from the libretto, we could play the original scintillating comedy, translated into Italian, without censorship problems (even if everyone knew the context well…) In 1786, the Nozze di Figaro was created: this amorous imbroglio located in Seville, where the Countess and Suzanna play cat and mouse with these gentlemen, in particular to avoid the sights of the Count on his servants…. Figaro undertakes to put all this little world at his own pace to confuse his Master while preserving the Countess' relationship with Chérubin. Here is an infernal machine launched at full speed, which allows Mozart airs of great beauty, a Figaro with an exceptional slaughter, and reversals of situation which are the object of great numbers of brilliant ensembles at the end of each act. Jubilatory!

If filmmaker James Gray has become a Hollywood star with epic blockbuster films ( The Immigrant, The Lost City of Z, Ad Astra - with Brad Pitt as a recurring hero), he chose The Wedding as his first production. of opera, and placed itself a thousand leagues from its aesthetics of cinema: here are sets and "period" costumes of extraordinary richness, plunging us into a universe which would place Seville in the sumptuous era of Beaumarchais and Marie Antoinette ! The Orchester de l'Opéra Royal is conducted by the young and twirling Gaétan Jarry, with a sumptuous cast: the diva Nafornita as Countess and the piquant Florie Valiquette as Susanna teaming up with Robert Gleadow's Atomic Figaro to make this evening a crazy one daytime !
