The Winter Harbor Music Festival presents Mozart’s comic opera, The Marriage of Figaro. The story picks up where we left our characters after Rossini’s Barber of Seville. Having successfully wooed Rosina, Count Almaviva’s affections begin to wander, eventually pitting him against his servant and friend, the crafty Figaro. Despite his best efforts, Figaro is able to outwit the count at every turn leading to hilarious consequences. 
The Marriage of Figaro will present with subtitles and directed by Deiran Manning. Michael Haigler will conduct the Winter Harbor Music Festival Orchestra, a group composed of local musicians, festival participants and faculty.

WINTER HARBOR — A much-loved comic opera will take to the stage this week at the Winter Harbor Music Festival.

This year’s production is Mozart’s comic opera “The Marriage of Figaro.” The story picks up where the Winter Harbor Music Festival’s (WHMF) 2022 performance of Rossini’s “Barber of Seville” left off. Having successfully wooed Rosina, Count Almaviva’s affections begin to wander, eventually pitting him against his servant and friend, the crafty Figaro. Despite his best efforts, Figaro is able to outwit the count at every turn, leading to hilarious consequences.

The “Marriage of Figaro” will be presented with subtitles and is directed by Deiran Manning. Michael Haigler will conduct the Winter Harbor Music Festival Orchestra, a group composed of local musicians, festival participants and faculty.

Haigler currently serves as music director at Christ Church in Oyster Bay, Long Island, home to the Christ Church Festival Orchestra, with which he has conducted requiems by Mozart, Fauré, Brahms and Rutter, and symphonies such as Mendelssohn’s Italian, Beethoven’s Ninth and Mahler’s Resurrection (complete). He also holds positions as artistic director of the Hudson Valley Chorale, assistant conductor and chorus master at the Bronx Opera and co-director of Pianos on the Point, a new summer workshop in Vermont.

The production will be directed by festival executive director Deiran Manning. Since the inception of the community opera program, Manning has produced, directed and coached seven operas in the region, most recently “The Pirates of Penzance” for the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Maine. His directing draws on experience working with noted directors such as Atlanta Opera artistic director Tomer Zvulun, and noted directors Candace Evans and Garnett Bruce. His experience as a vocal coach, singer and director gives him a unique perspective into the inner workings of opera.

In addition, festival veterans Josh Gurwitz, Celeste Mittlehauser, Peppin Mittelhauser, Henry Horstmann, Roland Dube, Cassandra Petrie, Logan Tarwarter and Chris Jurak will return. New performers include Megan Ortman and Alicia Boucer as well as the following:

• Surry resident Stephen L. Bryant returns as Don Bartolo. Bryant has appeared in numerous roles with New York City Opera, most recently in productions of “A Quiet Place” and “Intermezzo.” Other opera performances include Mr. Gobineau in “The Medium” at the Spoleto Festival USA; Robert Gonzales in Stewart Wallace’s “Harvey Milk” and the Bonze in “Madama Butterfly” with San Francisco Opera; Capulet in “Roméo et Juliette” with Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Michigan Opera Theatre, Chautauqua Opera, and Toledo Opera; George Milton in “Of Mice and Men” with Arizona Opera; and Indiana Elliot’s brother in Thomson’s “The Mother of Us All” with Santa Fe Opera.

• Virginia native baritone Wil Kellerman has been described as “superb...a promising voice” (OperaWire) and “winning” (Schmopera) in recent performances. Kellerman was a 2021 Resident Artist at Teatro Nuovo, where he performed the role of the Officer in “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” making his Lincoln Center debut. Kellerman returns this year to sing the role of Count Almaviva

• Celine Mogielnicki and Erin Casey sing the role of Rosina. Soprano Mogielnicki is a versatile artist, recognized for her “delicious” (Opera Today) and “finely balanced” singing (New York Times). Casey has been recently hailed for singing “perfect in diction and phrasing… with powerful gradations of emotions” (Millbrook Independent) and “her voice was consistent, well-balanced, and beautiful…” (Michael Miller, The Berkshire Review for the Arts). She is a frequent soloist with the Williams Chamber Players and The New Opera Company of Williamstown, Mass.
