A JOURNEY TO THE MOON The day before the premiere of each Opera production, come and meet the director, the conductor, the singers and discover their vision and their interpretation of the opera presented on stage. When the king of operettas, Jacques Offenbach, seizes a best-selling novel by Jules Verne, he transforms it into a show where, beneath the apparent exuberance and madness, there is nevertheless a real melancholy: what if the Earth was really becoming uninhabitable?

But what is it about here? King Vlan wishes to abdicate in favor of his son, the aptly named Caprice. But the latter refuses: he only dreams of freedom! Instead, he asks his father to take a trip to the Moon. After asking Microscope, the greatest scientist of his kingdom, for advice, the decision is made: they will settle inside a shell fired by a cannon and make this journey, to say the least, extraordinary. Of course, nothing will go as planned...

Under cover of setting off to discover the moon, Offenbach in fact invites us to rediscover ourselves, without ever losing the good humor and sense of humor that made his best works so successful.

Remembering Méliès, who also drew from this story a film that marked the origins of cinema, the director Olivier Fredj chooses to show the other side of this theater of special effects. With the illustrator Jean Lecointre as an accomplice, he creates a universe that is none other than that of a film set where illusions are created on sight! A beautiful tribute to the infinite power of the imagination.

Quand le roi de l’opérette, Jacques Offenbach, s’empare d’un roman à succès de Jules Verne, il le transforme en spectacle où, sous l’exubérance et la folie apparente, pointe pourtant une réelle mélancolie : et si la Terre était vraiment en train de devenir inhabitable ?

Mais de quoi est-il question ici ? Le Roi Vlan souhaite abdiquer en faveur de son fils, le bien nommé Caprice. Mais ce dernier refuse : il ne rêve que de liberté ! En revanche, il demande à son père de faire un voyage jusqu’à la Lune. Après avoir demandé conseil à Microscope, le plus grand savant de son royaume, la décision est prise : ils s’installeront à l’intérieur d’un obus tiré par un canon et feront ce voyage pour le moins extraordinaire. Bien sûr, rien ne se passera comme prévu…

Sous couvert de partir à la découverte de la lune, Offenbach nous invite en fait à nous redécouvrir nous-mêmes, sans jamais se départir de cette bonne humeur et de ce sens de l’humour qui firent le succès de ses meilleurs ouvrages.

Se souvenant de Méliès, qui tirait lui aussi de cette histoire un film qui marqua les origines du cinéma, le metteur en scène Olivier Fredj choisit de montrer l’envers de ce théâtre d’effets spéciaux. Avec pour complice l’illustrateur Jean Lecointre, il crée un univers qui n’est autre que celui d’un plateau de tournage où l’on fabrique les illusions à vue ! Bel hommage au pouvoir infini de l’imagination.
