In the semi-staged performance of the Brandenburg Theater, a shy boy with a tendency to rave - at first unhappy - falls in love with a well-off, somewhat capricious beauty. The old swindler Dulcamara, a quack, miracle doctor and street vendor, developed the eponymous magic potion, which soon made the emotions and melodies sparkle. The vain Schürzenjäger Belcore and the choir folk commenting on everything complete the staff for a turbulent day in the flair of the southern sun. The style of music is called Belcanto, "beautiful song", for a reason. Donizetti's musical cabinet pieces are of high virtuosity and lavish splendor: Melodic melting, fast-paced arias, a picture arch of Italian dolce vita feeling. Tragedy should not be missing as a mood.
