Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore - in English: The love potion - has been tipsy for generations: hardly any musical comedy has produced more persistent catchy tunes, a nobler cheerfulness and a more sustained laugh. The love potion, over 200 years old, is itself addictive, a drug that is quite harmless. A shy boy who tends to swarm falls in love – unhappily at first – with a well-to-do, somewhat capricious beauty. The old swindler Dulcamara, a quack doctor, miracle doctor and street vendor, develops the eponymous magic potion, which soon makes the emotions and melodies bubble. The vain womanizer Belcore and the chorus who commented on everything complete the cast for a turbulent day in the flair of the southern sun.

It is not without reason that the musical style is called “bel canto”, beautiful singing. Donizetti's musical showcase pieces are of high virtuosity and lavish splendor: melodic melt, fast-paced arias, a picture arc of Italian dolce vita feeling. Tragedy should not be missing as a mood. The production by Tobias Ribitzki exaggerates old theater traditions as a trashy medieval show in a cardboard backdrop and spans opera clichés between adoration from the audience and star posturing on the ramp across the entire orchestra pit.

Donizettis L'Elisir d'amore – zu Deutsch: Der Liebestrank – beschwipst seit Generationen: Kaum eine musikalische Komödie hat hartnäckigere Ohrwürmer erzeugt, eine noblere Heiterkeit und ein nachhaltigeres Lachen. Der Liebestrank, über 200 Jahre alt, hat nämlich selbst Suchtpotenzial, eine Droge, die doch ganz harmlos ist. Ein zum Schwärmen veranlagter, schüchterner Junge verliebt sich – zunächst unglücklich – in eine gut situierte, etwas kapriziöse Schöne. Der alte Schwindler Dulcamara, ein Quacksalber, Wunderdoktor und Straßenhändler, entwickelt den titelgebenden Zaubertrank, der alsbald die Emotionen und Melodien perlen lässt. Der eitle Schürzenjäger Belcore und das alles kommentierende Chorvolk komplettieren das Personal für einen turbulenten Tag im Flair südlicher Sonne.

Der Musikstil heißt nicht ohne Grund „Belcanto“, Schöngesang. Donizettis musikalische Kabinettstückchen sind von hoher Virtuosität und verschwenderischer Pracht: melodischer Schmelz, rasante Arien, ein Bilderbogen italienischen Dolce-Vita-Gefühls. Als Stimmung darf da auch Tragik nicht fehlen. Die Inszenierung von Tobias Ribitzki überhöht alte Theatertraditionen als trashige Mittelaltershow in Pappkulisse und spannt Opernklischees zwischen Anbetung aus dem Publikum und Stargehabe an der Rampe in großem Bogen über den ganzen Orchestergraben.
