ДОНІЦЕТТІ: МУЗИЧНА ЕПОХА МІЖ РОССІНІ І ВЕРДІ

За п’ятдесят років життя, з яких вісімнадцять треба відкинути на дитинство і навчання, Гаетано Доніцетті написав сімдесят опер (за іншими підрахунками сімдесят чотири), значну кількість творів в інших жанрах – симфонію, кантати, квартети, церковні хори, пісні. Тобто, набув слави одного з найплідніших композиторів першої половини ХІХ століття. До того ж, ще й одного з найпопулярніших. І не тільки в Італії, хоч успіхи і невдачі чергувалися в його творчості з регулярною послідовністю. Ще за життя композитора його опери підкорили сцени практично всіх європейських театрів – від міланського Ла Скала до петербурзької Маріїнки, від паризької Гранд Опера до віденського Придворного театру…

Він писав фантастично швидко, іноді опера на три, чотири, або й п’ять дій з’являлася з під його пера за два-три тижні. Здавалося, що муза творчості постійно супроводжувала композитора, а він просто таки купався у музиці, дихав нею. Опери Гаетано Доніцетті підкоряли багатством мелодики, хоч на той час – в епоху Россіні і Белліні – по- іншому й бути не могло. Але опери молодого композитора позначалися чимось суттєвішим – невимушеністю і легкістю, вишуканістю і виразністю вокальних партій, багатством і соковитістю оркестровок, стилістичною однорідністю кожного нового твору, хоч і писав він здебільшого на замовлення, враховуючи вимоги директорів театрів, які диктували йому власні смаки, визначали жанр опери, кількість дій і навіть кількість дійових осіб з уваги на заангажованих ними співаків.

З усім цим він погоджувався, витримував усі параметри договорів і писав чудову оперу… Правда, не завжди потрафляв смакам слухачів, які були в Італії справжніми цінителями, значно досвідченішими, ніж присяжні критики. Втім, його дуже високо поціновували колеги. Зокрема Вінченцо Белліні захоплено казав: “Музика Доніцетті прекрасна, чарівна, неповторна”, а Дж. Мадзінні, наголошуючи на багатогранності і природності таланту композитора, проголосив: “Доніцетті – високопрогресивний талант, який виявляє тенденції Відродження”.

Творча біографія Гаетано Доніцетті насичена життєвими і творчими подіями. Ще б пак! Він був присутнім майже на 300 прем’єрах своїх творів в різних театрах світу. Блискучих, прекрасних і… провальних. В його виставах співали найвидатніші вокалісти того часу. Йому випадали зустрічі з найзнаменитішими письменниками, художниками, політиками. Врешті, як відзначали сучасники, в Гаетано Доніцетті були закохані половина італійських жінок!

Г. Доніцетті народився в італійському місті Бергамо 29 листопада 1797 року в досить бідній сім’ї. Його батько був церковним сторожем, мати – ткалею. Як і більшість хлопчиків із таких родин, Гаетано прислужував у храмі, де й ознайомився з азами музики. На щастя хлопчика, місцевий органіст дуже швидко зрозумів, що маленький прислужник має не тільки ідеальний слух, але й музичне обдарування, тому вже у дев’ять років його зарахували у музичну школу, яка утримувалася на благодійні пожертви. У чотирнадцять Гаетано Доніцетті стає учнем музичного ліцею (консерваторії) у Болоньї, де був клас композиції. Навчаючись тут, написав три опери – “Пігмаліон”, “Олімпіада” та “Гнів Ахілла”. А завершив навчання симфонією до мажор для великого симфонічного оркестру. У вісімнадцятирічному віці досить успішно дебютував оперою “Енріко, граф Бургундський” у Венеції і відразу отримав пропозицію заключити угоду з дирекцією Римської опери, для якої написав “Зораїду Гранатську”, яка також пройшла з помітним успіхом. Між цими двома операми він написав ще й оперу “Петро Великий, цар російський, Або Лівонський тесля", яка також мала прихильність і критики, і глядачів. Успішні дебюти відкрили молодому композитору шлях до найбільших італійських оперних сцен, зокрема й до Ла Скала.

Про Доніцетті заговорили як про спадкоємця Россіні. Італія, яка довгий час боялася втрати своє домінуюче становище в європейському музичному світі, зітхнула з полегкістю. З’явився композитор, який взяв у свої руки естафету від Белліні та Россіні.

Одним з найвизначніших творів Гаетано Доніцетті того часу стала опера “Лукреція Борджа” написана за мотивами драми французького письменника Віктора Гюго. І хоч критика та глядачі відгукнулися на нову оперу свого кумира досить прохолодно, її було показано в тому сезоні тридцять три рази. На відміну від багатьох інших опер Доніцетті, від яких тогочасна італійська публіка шаленіла, “Анна Болейн”, прохолодно оцінена сучасниками, перейшла до репертуару багатьох європейських театрів і ставиться, хоч і не часто, дотепер! До вершинних творів спадщини Доніцетті належить написана в 1835 році опера “Лючія ді Ламмермур” за мотивами роману Вальтера Скотта. Треба зауважити, що композитор блискуче знався на тогочасній як італійській, так і зарубіжній літературі, чудово відчував драматургію сюжетів, безпомилково визначав, який твір міг би стати основою лібрето і хоробро брався за музичну інтерпретацію цікавих літературних оповідей.

Творчі успіхи молодого композитора однак затьмарювалися низкою сімейних трагедій. Він втрачає дитину, потім батьків, дружину Вірджинію, яка не дожила й до тридцяти років. На якийсь час Гаетано Доніцетті втрачає повністю смак до життя та опиняється майже на грані самогубства. Знадобилися великі зусилля друзів і колег по музиці, щоб відчай остаточно не зламав молодого композитора. Здолавши депресію, він знову починає писати, рятуючись від спогадів про втрачене сімейне щастя і меланхолії, яка вже раз-по-раз охоплюватиме його і, врешті, приведе до смерті на 51 році життя.

З творчої прострації композитора остаточно виведе робота над “Фавориткою”, написаною в стилі французької великої опери спеціально для паризької Гран Опера. Прем’єра, у якій були задіяні найвидатніші тогочасні італійські і французькі співаки, стала справжнім тріумфом оперного мистецтва та композитора, творчість якого розкрилася багатьма новими гранями. Як і “Анна Болейн”, «Фаворитка” ввійшла до золотого фонду світового оперного мистецтва. Навіть Ріхард Вагнер, досить неприхильний до італійських композиторів і до стилю французької великої опери, захоплено відгукнувся на виставу, відзначивши цільність форми опери, вміння розкрити засобами вокалу і музики глибину почуттів й історичне тло подій.

Його нові опери йдуть практично в усіх театрах Європи, зокрема й на придворних сценах, що було також яскравим свідченням визнання. До появи перших опер Дж. Верді, Гаетано Доніцетті заслужено мав статус найвидатнішого композитора свого часу.

Невдовзі його було запрошено придворним композитором у Відень на дуже вигідних для творчої людини умовах (1842). У столиці Австрії відбулася прем’єра його опери “Лінда ді Шамуні”, а в Парижі – “Дон Паскуале” – два прекрасні зразки доніцеттівських музичних шедеврів, які й дотепер прикрашають оперні сцени світу.

Значну увагу приділяв композитор комічному жанру, створивши кілька опер, серед яких був і “Любовний напій”. В цьому жанрі він довгий час залишався неперевершеним. Плеяда майбутніх його спадкоємців саме через твори Гаетано Доніцетті опановувала цей веселий та іскрометний жанр. Можна з великою впевненістю говорити, що саме він своїми легкими і сповненими іскристості невеликими комічними операми намітив народження дуже популярного в майбутньому жанру класичної оперети.

«Любовний напій» став сороковою оперою в його творчому доробку. Приступаючи до роботи над нею, Гаетано Доніцетті з іронією писав своєму постійному лібретисту Ф. Романі: “Маю написати оперу за два тижні. З них виділяю вам лише один. Тільки майте на увазі, що у нас примадонна-німкеня, тенор-заїка, буффо з козлячим голосом і безликий французький бас. Тим часом можете себе прославити…”

Молодий селянин Неморіно до безтями закоханий у чарівну, але досить вередливу орендарку довколишніх земель Адіну. Тільки ось як порозумітися з нею – не знає. Тим часом і в Адіни пробилося до сором’язливого юнака щось схоже на почуття. Щоб роздратувати Неморіно, вона готова вийти заміж за сержанта Белькоре... Нещасний Неморіно кидається до пройдисвіта Дулькамари, який видає себе за лікаря та пропонує чарівний еліксир, що може привернути серце дівчини. Одна пляшки не подіяла, чари не склалися. На другу в Неморіно немає грошей. Белькоре скористався ситуацією і запропонував юнаку записатися в солдати, де він зможе швидко і назавжди забути про Адіну, яка завтра має стати дружиною хвацького сержанта.

Не вельми вигадливий, якщо не сказати звичайнісінький для італійського стилю опери-буф сюжет, був пройнятий справжнім гумором, дотепністю та іронічністю, що завжди подобалося італійській публіці. Лібрето знайшло адекватне відображення і в романтичній, веселій, сповненій світлом і повітрям Тоскани музиці молодого композитора. В сюжеті були використані мотиви водевілю «Напій» Е. Скріба, який використав французький композитор Д. Обер для однойменної опери, що на час Гаетано Доніцетті вже не йшла ні на французькій, ні на якій іншій сцені.

Може, саме про цей твір німецький поет Генріх Гейне, який дуже любив музику Доніцетті, сказав: “Мелодії Доніцетті своєю веселістю і дотепністю тішать світ”

Прем’єра відбулася на сцені міланського “Ла Скала” 12 травня 1832 року. Це був один з найяскравіших прижиттєвих творчих тріумфів молодого, на той час дуже щасливого і піднесеного, захмелілого від кохання до дружини Вірджинії Гаетано Доніцетті, який писав цю музику не тільки для театру, але й для коханої жінки.

Протягом сезону вистава була показана тридцять два рази при постійно переповненому залі. А в 1837 році з тріумфом пройшла в Італійському театрі в Парижі. Розпочався світовий тріумф опери, який продовжується і дотепер.

DONIZETTI: THE MUSICAL ERA BETWEEN ROSSINI AND VERDI

During fifty years of life, eighteen of which should be set aside for childhood and studies, Gaetano Donizetti wrote seventy operas (according to other estimates seventy-four), a significant number of works in other genres - symphonies, cantatas, quartets, church choirs, songs. That is, he became famous as one of the most prolific composers of the first half of the 19th century. In addition, one of the most popular. And not only in Italy, although successes and failures alternated in his work with a regular sequence. During the composer's lifetime, his operas conquered the stages of almost all European theaters - from Milan's La Scala to St. Petersburg's Mariinka, from the Paris Grand Opera to the Vienna Court Theater...

He wrote fantastically fast, sometimes an opera with three, four, or even five acts appeared from his pen in two or three weeks. It seemed that the muse of creativity constantly accompanied the composer, and he simply bathed in music, breathed in it. Gaetano Donizetti's operas captivated with the richness of melodies, although at that time - in the era of Rossini and Bellini - it could not be otherwise. But the operas of the young composer were marked by something more essential - the ease and lightness, the sophistication and expressiveness of the vocal parts, the richness and juiciness of the orchestrations, the stylistic uniformity of each new work, although he mostly wrote to order, taking into account the requirements of theater directors, who dictated his own tastes, defined the genre operas, the number of actions and even the number of protagonists from the attention of the singers involved.

He agreed with all this, kept all the parameters of the contracts and wrote a wonderful opera... However, he did not always please the tastes of the listeners, who in Italy were real connoisseurs, much more experienced than sworn critics. However, he was highly appreciated by his colleagues. In particular, Vincenzo Bellini enthusiastically said: "Donizetti's music is beautiful, charming, unique", and G. Mazzini, emphasizing the versatility and naturalness of the composer's talent, proclaimed: "Donizetti is a highly progressive talent who reveals the tendencies of the Renaissance."

The creative biography of Gaetano Donizetti is full of life and creative events. Still! He was present at almost 300 premieres of his works in various theaters of the world. Brilliant, beautiful and... failed. The most outstanding vocalists of that time sang in his performances. He had meetings with the most famous writers, artists, and politicians. After all, as contemporaries noted, half of Italian women were in love with Gaetano Donizetti!

G. Donizetti was born in the Italian city of Bergamo on November 29, 1797 in a rather poor family. His father was a church watchman, his mother a weaver. Like most boys from such families, Gaetano served in the temple, where he learned the basics of music. Fortunately for the boy, the local organist very quickly realized that the little servant had not only perfect hearing, but also musical talent, so at the age of nine he was enrolled in a music school, which was supported by charitable donations. At the age of fourteen, Gaetano Donizetti became a student at a musical lyceum (conservatory) in Bologna, where he had a composition class. While studying here, he wrote three operas - "Pygmalion", "Olympiad" and "The Wrath of Achilles". And he completed his studies with a symphony in C major for a large symphony orchestra. At the age of eighteen, he quite successfully debuted with the opera "Enrico, Count of Burgundy" in Venice and immediately received an offer to conclude an agreement with the management of the Roman Opera, for which he wrote "Zoraida Granatska", which was also a notable success. Between these two operas, he also wrote the opera "Peter the Great, Tsar of Russia, Or the Carpenter of Livonia", which was also loved by both critics and audiences. Successful debuts opened the way for the young composer to the biggest Italian opera stages, including La Scala.

Donizetti was talked about as Rossini's heir. Italy, which for a long time feared losing its dominant position in the European music world, breathed a sigh of relief. A composer appeared who took over the baton from Bellini and Rossini.

One of the most significant works of Gaetano Donizetti at that time was the opera "Lucrezia Borgia" based on the drama of the French writer Victor Hugo. And although the critics and the audience responded to the new opera of their idol quite coolly, it was shown thirty-three times that season. Unlike many other Donizetti operas, which drove the Italian public crazy at the time, "Anna Boleyn", coolly evaluated by contemporaries, entered the repertoire of many European theaters and is performed, although not often, until now! The opera "Lucia di Lammermoor" written in 1835 based on Walter Scott's novel belongs to the top works of Donizetti's legacy. It should be noted that the composer was brilliantly versed in both Italian and foreign literature of the time, had a great sense of the drama of the plots, unmistakably defined,

However, the creative success of the young composer was overshadowed by a series of family tragedies. He loses a child, then his parents, his wife Virginia, who did not live to be thirty. For a while, Gaetano Donizetti completely loses his taste for life and finds himself almost on the verge of suicide. It took great efforts of friends and colleagues in music so that despair did not finally break the young composer. Having overcome depression, he begins to write again, escaping from memories of lost family happiness and melancholy, which will overtake him again and again and eventually lead to his death at the age of 51.

The work on "The Favorite", written in the style of a French grand opera especially for the Paris Grand Opera, will finally bring the composer out of creative prostration. The premiere, in which the most outstanding Italian and French singers of the time were involved, was a real triumph of operatic art and the composer, whose creativity opened up in many new facets. Like "Anne Boleyn", "The Favorite" entered the golden fund of world opera art. Even Richard Wagner, quite unfavored to Italian composers and to the style of French grand opera, enthusiastically responded to the performance, noting the integrity of the opera's form, the ability to reveal the depth of feelings and the historical background of events through vocal and musical means.

His new operas are performed in almost all theaters of Europe, including on court stages, which was also a clear sign of recognition. Before the appearance of G. Verdi's first operas, Gaetano Donizetti deservedly had the status of the most outstanding composer of his time.

Soon he was invited by the court composer to Vienna on very favorable conditions for a creative person (1842). The premiere of his opera "Linda di Chamouni" took place in the capital of Austria, and "Don Pasquale" took place in Paris - two beautiful examples of Donizetti's musical masterpieces, which still adorn the opera stages of the world.

The composer paid considerable attention to the comic genre, creating several operas, among which was "Love Potion". In this genre, he remained unsurpassed for a long time. The galaxy of his future heirs mastered this cheerful and sparkling genre precisely through the works of Gaetano Donizetti. We can say with great confidence that it was he who planned the birth of the classical operetta genre, which will be very popular in the future, with his light and sparkling small comic operas.

"Love Drink" became the fortieth opera in his creative work. When starting work on it, Gaetano Donizetti ironically wrote to his regular librettist F. Romani: "I have to write an opera in two weeks. I will highlight only one of them. Just keep in mind that we have a German diva, a tenor bunny, a goat-voiced buffo and a faceless French bass. In the meantime, you can glorify yourself..."

The young peasant Nemorino is madly in love with Adina, a charming but rather cranky tenant of the nearby lands. He just doesn't know how to get along with her. Meanwhile, Adina also felt something similar to feelings for the shy young man. In order to annoy Nemorino, she is ready to marry Sergeant Belcore... Unfortunate Nemorino rushes to the courtesan Dulcamara, who pretends to be a doctor and offers a magical elixir that can win the girl's heart. One bottle didn't work, the spell didn't work. There is no money for a friend in Nemorino. Belcore took advantage of the situation and offered the young man to enlist in the soldiers, where he could quickly and forever forget about Adina, who was to become the wife of a dashing sergeant tomorrow.

Not very fancy, if not to say ordinary for the Italian style of opera-buff plot, was imbued with real humor, wit and irony, which the Italian public always liked. The libretto was adequately reflected in the young composer's romantic, cheerful, light and air-filled music of Tuscany. The plot used motifs from the vaudeville play "Drink" by E. Scrib, which was used by the French composer D. Aubert for the opera of the same name, which at the time of Gaetano Donizetti was no longer performed either on the French stage or on any other stage.

Perhaps it was about this work that the German poet Heinrich Heine, who loved Donizetti's music very much, said: "Donizetti's melodies delight the world with their gaiety and wit."

The premiere took place on May 12, 1832 on the stage of Milan's La Scala. It was one of the brightest creative triumphs of the young, at that time very happy and exalted, giddy with love for his wife Virginia Gaetano Donizetti, who wrote this music not only for the theater, but also for his beloved woman.

During the season, the play was shown thirty-two times to a constantly crowded hall. And in 1837, it took place with a triumph at the Italian Theater in Paris. The world triumph of opera began, which continues to this day.
