Mit der Wiederaufnahme von Gaetano Donizettis Komödien-Klassiker L’elisir d’amore kehrt einer der ganz grossen Spezialisten für das italienische Opernrepertoire ans Pult der Philharmonia Zürich zurück: der dem Haus über Jahrzehnte hinweg verbundene Nello Santi. Die junge Ukrainerin Olga Kulchynska, die mit ihrem Debüt als Giulietta in Bellinis Capuleti e i Montecchi einen sensationellen Erfolg am Opernhaus Zürich hatte, singt erstmals die Adina, ihr Geliebter Nemorino ist unser Ensemblemitglied Pavol Breslik.

Dieser glaubt – unter dem Einfluss der Legende von Tristan und Isolde –, seine geliebte Adina mithilfe eines Liebestranks für sich gewinnen zu können, und gibt dafür seinen letzten Heller aus. Obwohl das Elixier, das der reisende Arzt und Scharlatan Dulcamara an Nemorino verkauft, nichts weiter ist als eine Flasche Bordeaux, tut es nach vielen Verwicklungen doch seine Wirkung: Adina erkennt die Wahrhaftigkeit von Nemorinos Liebe und gibt dem aufschneiderischen Sergeanten Belcore den Laufpass. Mit der Vertonung von Nemorinos aufrichtiger Liebe führt Donizetti einen neuen Tonfall in die Opera buffa ein: die lyrische Kantilene, die von Verzweiflung und Melancholie berichtet – an keiner Stelle so eindringlich wie in der berühmt gewordenen Romanze «Una furtiva lagrima».

With the revival of Gaetano Donizetti's comedy classic L'elisir d'amore , one of the greatest specialists in the Italian operatic repertoire returns to the podium of the Zurich Philharmonia: Nello Santi, who has been associated with the house for decades. The young Ukrainian Olga Kulchynska, who had a sensational success at the Zurich Opera House with her debut as Giulietta in Bellini's Capuleti ei Montecchi , sings Adina for the first time, her lover Nemorino is our ensemble member Pavol Breslik.

Under the influence of the legend of Tristan and Isolde, he believes he can win his beloved Adina over with a love potion and spends his last penny on it. Although the elixir that the traveling doctor and charlatan Dulcamara sells to Nemorino is nothing more than a bottle of Bordeaux, it still has its effect after many entanglements: Adina recognizes the truth of Nemorino's love and dumps the swaggering sergeant Belcore. With the setting of Nemorino's sincere love, Donizetti introduces a new tone into the opera buffa: the lyrical cantilena that tells of despair and melancholy - at no point so poignantly as in the now famous romance «Una furtiva lagrima».
