Dans cette cantate pastorale de jeunesse datant de son premier séjour romain (1708), Haendel a en effet puisé de nombreuses années plus tard la matière à plusieurs de ses chefs-d’œuvre – certains airs parmi les plus fameux d’Agrippina, de Rinaldo ou de l’Ode à Sainte Cécile sont littéralement extraits de la partition ! C’est dire aussi la stupéfiante variété des quelques 40 arias qui émaillent cette cantate qui fut tout d’abord composée pour le marquis Ruspoli et l’Académie des Arcadiens – un groupe de lettrés réunis sous le patronage de la reine Christine de Suède et qui aimaient à se retrouver sous la chaleur de l’été romain dans les idylliques jardins du marquis. Près d’une heure durant, y sont relatés dans un style tout en sobriété, les assauts amoureux du berger Aminte auxquels la réticence de la nymphe Phyllis fait obstacle – mais la constance et la fidélité d’Aminte finiront par faire fondre le cœur de la belle.

In this youthful pastoral cantata dating from his first stay in Rome (1708), Handel in fact drew material many years later from several of his masterpieces – some of the most famous arias from Agrippina , Rinaldo or the Ode to Saint Ceciliaare literally extracted from the score! This also goes to show the astounding variety of some 40 arias that dot this cantata, which was first composed for the Marquis Ruspoli and the Academy of Arcadians – a group of scholars gathered under the patronage of Queen Christina of Sweden and who loved to meet under the heat of the Roman summer in the idyllic gardens of the marquis. For almost an hour, the amorous assaults of the shepherd Aminte are recounted in a sober style, to which the reluctance of the nymph Phyllis stands in the way - but the constancy and fidelity of Aminte will end up melting the heart of the beautiful.
