On les associe plutôt à Monteverdi, Gesualdo, Bach ou Rameau, mais Les Arts Florissants jouent aussi Beethoven, y compris les œuvres qui ont été le pré carré des grands chefs romantiques ou postromantiques comme la Sixième Symphonie.

Il y a presque trente ans, les Arts florissants et William Christie avaient fait une première incursion chez le maître de Bonn, avec la Missa solemnis, dont Christie soulignait alors avec justesse tout ce qu’elle devait à la rhétorique du XVIIIe siècle. Le codirecteur des Arts flo Paul Agnew, que l’on a entendu ces dernières années dans des programmes Bach ou Schütz, se tourne cette fois vers la Sixième Symphonie. La partition a fasciné bien des musiciens romantiques, qui ont vu là une préfiguration de leurs aspirations, dont l’exaltation de la nature. En première partie, Paul Agnew retrouve dans le Troisième Concerto pour violon de Mozart - pleinement représentatif du style galant - Théotime Langlois de Swarte, grand interprète du répertoire baroque.
