Les Mamelles de Tirésias by Poulenc finds its inspiration in the eponymous drama by Apollinaire created in 1917, three years after Stravinsky's Le Rossignol . If Stravinsky's work presents certain stylistic disparities linked to the time of its maturation from 1908 to 1914, it remains imprinted with the spirit of his master Rimsky-Korsakov and especially that of the Golden Cockerel.. Poulenc also took his time to refine the adaptation of the play by Apollinaire (one of the musician's favorite poets) which lasted throughout the period of the Second World War. The musician takes malicious pleasure in pastiche different lyrical forms and incorporates certain modern rhythms such as jazz. Both books question in their own way the theme of appearance and the powers it confers, between the melodious bird and its mechanical double in Stravinsky and between man and woman in Poulenc. Under its aspect of surrealist pochade, Les Mamelles appears as a real social and even societal firebrand questioning, not without humor and cynicism, the place and role of women. A question that remains devilishly topical.

A brilliant team of French soloists has been brought together for this diptych, notably with Sabine Devieilhe, Cyrille Dubois, Laurent Naouri, Jean-Sébastien Bou... In the pit and at the pulpit, Les Siècles and their founder and director François-Xavier Roth who inaugurate this season a multi-project residence (opera, concerts, program for young audiences and families) avenue Montaigne. Finally, as stage manager, we find Olivier Py and his faithful accomplice Pierre-André Weitz who closes the Poulenc cycle which they had brilliantly inaugurated in 2012 with Les Dialogues des Carmélites before La Voix humaine coupled with the creation of Point d' Organof Thierry Escaich last season. We bet that this double questioning of identity will once again inspire them to the highest degree.

Les Mamelles de Tirésias de Poulenc trouvent leur inspiration dans le drame éponyme d’Apollinaire créé en 1917, soit trois ans après Le Rossignol de Stravinsky. Si l’ouvrage de Stravinsky présente certaines disparités stylistiques liées au temps de sa maturation de 1908 à 1914, elle reste empreinte de l’esprit de son maître Rimski-Korsakov et tout particulièrement de celui du Coq d’Or. Poulenc prit lui aussi son temps pour peaufiner l’adaptation de la pièce d’Apollinaire (l’un des poètes préférés du musicien) qui dura pendant toute la période du second conflit mondial. Le musicien y prend un malin plaisir à pasticher différentes formes lyriques et y intègre certains rythmes modernes comme le jazz. Les deux ouvrages interrogent à leur manière le thème de l’apparence et des pouvoirs que cela confère, entre l’oiseau mélodieux et son double mécanique chez Stravinsky et entre l’homme et la femme chez Poulenc. Sous son aspect de pochade surréaliste, Les Mamelles apparaissent comme un véritable brûlot social et même sociétal interrogeant non sans humour et cynisme la place et le rôle de la femme. Une question qui reste diablement d’actualité.

Une brillante équipe de solistes français a été réunie pour ce diptyque avec notamment Sabine Devieilhe, Cyrille Dubois, Laurent Naouri, Jean-Sébastien Bou… Dans la fosse et au pupitre, Les Siècles et leur fondateur et directeur François-Xavier Roth qui inaugurent cette saison une résidence multi projets (opéra, concerts, programme jeune public et en famille) avenue Montaigne. Enfin en maître d’œuvre scénique, nous retrouvons Olivier Py et son fidèle complice Pierre-André Weitz qui clôt le cycle Poulenc qu’ils avaient brillamment inauguré en 2012 avec Les Dialogues des Carmélites avant La Voix humaine couplé à la création de Point d’Orgue de Thierry Escaich la saison dernière. Gageons que cette double interrogation sur l’identité les inspire de nouveau au plus haut point.
