Mit der Oper Die Perlenfischer (Les pêcheurs de perles) gelang dem erst 24-jährigen Georges Bizet ein wahrer Geniestreich mit dem wohl schönsten Männerduett der gesamten Opernliteratur („Au fond du temple saint“).  Wie ein Leitmotiv durchzieht seine einprägsame Melodie das komplette Werk. Doch es gibt weitaus mehr faszinierende Melodien in diesem Opernjuwel zu entdecken. In der konzertanten Aufführung am Theater Krefeld und Mönchengladbach liegt der Fokus ganz auf der musikalischen Interpretation der Oper.

Die dramatische Handlung um eine unglückliche Dreiecksbeziehung zwischen Zurga, dem Oberhaupt der Perlenfischer, Leila, der Tempelpriesterin, und Nadir, Jäger und Jugendfreund Zurgas, ist verortet im fernen Sri Lanka (damals noch Ceylon). Auf grandiose Weise gelingt es Bizet, mit seiner Musik exotische Atmosphäre zu zeichnen, dramatische Situationen zu gestalten und die Protagonisten individuell zu charakterisieren.

With the opera The Pearl Fishers (Les pêcheurs de perles) , the only 24-year-old Georges Bizet achieved a real stroke of genius with what is probably the most beautiful male duet in the entire operatic literature (" Au fond du temple saint "). His memorable melody runs through the entire work like a leitmotif. But there are far more fascinating melodies to be discovered in this opera jewel. In the concert performance at the theaters in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, the focus is entirely on the musical interpretation of the opera.

The dramatic plot about an unfortunate love triangle between Zurga , the head of the pearl fishermen, Leila , the temple priestess, and Nadir , hunter and childhood friend of Zurga, is located in distant Sri Lanka (Ceylon at the time). In a grandiose way, Bizet succeeds in drawing an exotic atmosphere with his music, creating dramatic situations and characterizing the protagonists individually.
