Nous sommes en 1863, douze ans avant le triomphe de Carmen et en plein courant orientaliste. Le jeune Bizet, tout juste âgé de vingt ans mais déjà auréolé de son Prix de Rome, compose un ouvrage « exotique » pour satisfaire l’attente du public de l’époque. Sur l’île de Ceylan, deux amis épris de la même femme, prêtent serment de ne pas la séduire. La trahison de l’un deux brisera cette amitié et grandira l’autre par son pardon et son sacrifice. Il y est donc question d’amitié et d’amour dans une île aux couleurs exotiques mais ici déjà, Bizet offre toutes les facettes de son art en devenir.

We are in 1863, twelve years before the triumph of Carmen and in full orientalist current. The young Bizet, just twenty years old but already crowned with his Prix de Rome, composed an "exotic" work to satisfy the expectations of the public of the time. On the island of Ceylon, two friends in love with the same woman take an oath not to seduce her. The betrayal of one of them will break this friendship and the other will grow through his forgiveness and his sacrifice. It is therefore a question of friendship and love in an island with exotic colors but here already, Bizet offers all the facets of his art in the making.
